Court filings reveal #Anthropic and #Amazon both ran secret operations to buy millions of rare physical books - scanning the contents to feed into training #AI models, and then permanently destroying them.

How long can we allow this cultural theft and erasure masked as 'progress' to continue?

@greenpeace
They are building the evidence for future trials themselves. Every rare book is scanned which is proof they destroyed it.
MAKE THEM PAY !!!! And I don’t mean juist money, hold them responsabel and jail them. -

@greenpeace Vernor Vinge was right, he pridicted the destructive scanning of books for AI training in Rainbow's End.

@greenpeace rather "how dare we" instead of "how long can we" - action > hand wringing - it's the only way out of this hellscape

If they released all the scans it would be better for humanity, as a whole. These rare books were just going to be shelve filler for the 1%’s private study, they weren’t ever going to be opened or read. Humanity lost these books when we allowed them to be rare and collected.

Looking to de-Amazon….really just trying to totally quit shopping there. I find the large selection hard to quit. Any suggestions?

@passwordsarehard4 @ericschutte @greenpeace Unfortunately, the scans are not publicly available—even for a price—and the scanning process is haphazard. So, information in archives and collections, available to scholars, is being destroyed. Not to mention the books themselves, which are artifacts of publishing (eg, bookbinding, inks, papers, formatting).
