It ends, not because he has bad ratings, but — I believe — because CBS does not have the courage to continue to speak truth to power.
I hope with all my heart, that Stephen Colbert finds a different path, where he can continue informing the public in the unique and entertaining way he masters so well.

It will likely be for the better as the show is a tremendous undertaking and can be done for a fraction of the cost independently. Letterman retired in '16 and Colbert took over with the ability to get independent voices out via social media not as easy as it is now.
Network TV and its decades old affiliate system is dying and the same person buys up all of the affiliates in the small markets as it is.

@Randahl Fink If I were him, I'd probably leave the US and go back to Britain.
Not safe to live in a country that's rapidly sliding into fascism, especially if you're a foreigner who has a history of mocking government and exposing injustice. -
