    European Twitter exploded following yesterday’s rants by US and Russian hardliners calling to “abolish EU”.

    Lots of voices like “we need European social media!!”

    And I said, “actually, you know what, we kind of have one for years…” 😆

    Some people started complaining “but nobody uses Mastodon” and I once again had no choice but to explain that if “nobody uses” then how come I’ve got 3k+ followers here and engaging in truly interesting discussions not less often than there😁

    There’s two data points where Fediverse can be indeed seen as less attractive than US cortisol aggregators:

    • number of engagements, but granted that up to 60-70% of these on Twitter are generated by bots who cares? Maybe media advertising agencies do, but I don’t.
    • presence of public persons - this is where Fediverse actually loses, because it’s a network that grows between them and can’t be “invited”

      @kravietz Calling to abolish the EU is acceptable on Mastodon, isn't it? I don't think I've ever seen it mentioned in server rules.

        @ghouston @kravietz I don't think it specifically breaks the rules on *most* instances. It is a political statement, and while I disagree with it, it's not abhorrent (like calling for violence, racism, etc).
        That being said, the people who call for EU abolition on social media are often the type of people who can't resist saying actually hateful things. So it's only a matter of time before they get banned for something else.

          @Jumpmed@mastodon.social @ghouston@mamot.fr

          These particular guys now ranting on Twitter about for “abolishment of EU” do have some experience with Fedi and it’s mostly negative - they were collectively kicked as soon as they opened their mouths 😂 But that’s because they are used to delivering angry monologues which are then boosted by millions of bots. This naturally didn’t work here.

          Personally, I like to hear dissenting voices on any topic, as long as they are delivered in civilised manner.

          One thing I’m quite disappointed in the Mastodon community is its collective inability to discuss difficult topics like - and sorry if it’s triggering - immigration, religion, extent of human rights or human sexuality. I’m myself definitely identifying as follower of liberal values, but I can’t reject things I see with my own eyes - and talk about them.

          All of which also happen to be the very topic that largely drive the alt-right movement today, which do not discuss them either but misrepresent in the most filthy ways. But because “the other side” prefers to simply keep their head in the warm sand of “liberal consensus” rather than discuss real challenges, these freaks gain voters while we lose.

          So it seems like we’re doomed to fostering tribal anger in two separate bubbles 🤷

            I don't see `Mastodon` as ` Forum`. This is a completely different thing, where there is catalogue of rubrics with more or less permanent topics within, and replies stream is specific to each topic. So Mastodon is close to IRC chat by its no-topic stream of all messages including "private mentions".
            May be I am old-fashioned a bit but i have a very specific understanding of what internet FORUM is.
            "We need EU social media" sounds as "we need an own copy of Twitter 1x1"

              @koteisaev@mastodon.online

              That’s how many people originating from FB/X/Insta understand it, because they are used to a “single brand, single platform” model. I have a lot of explaining on that topic.

              But once you explain how it works - like “EC posts from EC instance, and you post from mastodon.com.pl instance, but YOU CAN INTERACT as if you were on one platform” they get it.

              The discussion about what is forum or not is semantic - for me as an infosec guy ActivityPub is just a really clever way for websites to interact between themselves and I like the opportunities it opened 🙂

              In theory, even an old classic phpBB could have each forum post or topic shareable over ActivityPub, with external comments appearing in the thread too. The question is whether anyone implemented this yet and would it catch with them.

                @kravietz I seen a simple explanation for that, "It is like email - you have an address at your ISP or mailbox.org but can interact with everyone who use email, no matter where they have their mailbox".
                I can't find any mention of such integration regarding phpBB, only discussions regarding nodeBB.

                I separate forum (slow-pace space of permanent / persisting discussions vs chat - endless stream of mess like IRC chatroom or X, or even Mastodon (with benefit of manual "give newer messages" button)

                  We have federation turned on for forum.fedi.dk (nodeBB).

                  It has some quirks still, but it has allowed us to make forum posts out of toots, and for toots to respond to forum posts. Makes it much easier to reach a critical level of activity.

                  It doesn't have account migration but that's not a core expectation of forum users anyway (should it be?).

                  The web forum part is really nice, it's easy to sense years of polishing work.
