    @crankylinuxuser @TripTilt @tante Can a pretty low-tech, non savvy guy run these tools? Like, install and run?

      It's a test about how you treat other people, whether you respect their dignity. And you failed.

      Access and consent are two different things. Ethical people understand the gap.

          This is also a message for people who say "no-LLM-generated-code policies are useless because how will you detect that my code is LLM generated"

            @crankylinuxuser @trashpanda @TripTilt If you don't want to prove you're not a bot, you can always go to some other website than @tante's.

            If I block you on Mastodon, there are lots of ways for you to circumvent that and read my posts anyway. Authorized-Fetch is only enough to make it so you've got to register an alt account. But if you actually do that, it means you recognized I set a boundary--"don't read my posts or interact with me"--and you violated it on purpose.

            Why exactly should bypassing Anubis be acceptable, if evading a Masto block is not?

            @clayote @crankylinuxuser @TripTilt @tante Want to add to this to make it even more inline with the example given: this remains true even if you run your own Mastodon instance on your own hardware that you built with your own hands in your own house on your own land.

              @utf_7 @hexaheximal @tante @davidgerard Recaptcha automatically blocks all of us human users who block Google for privacy reasons.

              Now they want access to web cams that many desktops and laptops don't even HAVE or in the case of laptops are often broken on Linux. The privacy implications of that are staggering.

              I simply treat sites that hide behind Recaptcha as having been taken down

                @utf_7 @tante @davidgerard from a technical perspective, it is actually trivially easy to defeat anubis. it works by calculating a hash proof-of-work, which a standalone program can do too. and, of course, once the challenge is completed it stores a challenge proof as a cookie. the result is an anti-bot system that is really just a javascript checker with fancy marketing

                from a technical perspective, it is actually trivially easy to rape. it works by touching a person on specific parts, which anyone can do. and, of course, once the victim is in shock, she won't be in any capacity to do anything. the result is an anti-rape system that is really just private boundaries with fancy marketing

                  @Newhereish @trashpanda @TripTilt @tante

                  I'm a system engineer. I run online services as well, professionally, and personally.

                  I know what abuse is. Hack attempts (get /../../../../ etc). DoS. DDoS. There's a few others, but the commonality is that they attempt to exhaust a limited resource to prevent me from the thing.

                  Running a custom user agent and ingesting into a search engine/cache not is NOT ABUSIVE.

                  Just because I did something you didn't like, does not make it abusive. Hell, I've fought with idiots who disabled right-click menus on websites. Like no, you sent my agent the data. I have it already.

                  But again, this is just more #LLM hatred #propaganda . There's more and more of us who run local-everything. And yes, local search/cache agents, with local LLMs and more.

                  And yea, the LLM companies are terrible. I don't use'em. I don't have to.

                          @utf_7 @hexaheximal @tante @davidgerard Supposedly to use video to verify they are not talking to a bot.

                          You can bet that once they have it, they will repurpose it no matter what's in their privacy policy, I would no more trust Google with video of my face and surroundings than I would trust Flock or Palantir with the same.

                            @tante Ultimately, this is why I opted for a different stance. Instead of trying to block anything, every page has license text that explicitly states that use with AI software implies they agree the my commercial license for my content, which is $30 million USD. Yes, I'm willing to cash-out. (It's a dual-license, which is normal enough.)

                            By feeding my content to AI software, they both agree that the pricing is fair and that they're willing to pay.

                            You have to click a link to hide the license as in a JavaScript-capable browser and you don't see the real text until you do. In a text-mode browser or without Javascript it simply always shows. It prints on every page, but in small print.

                            It's what the software industry calls a "shrinkwrap license" so it isn't anything particularly new or strange. They read the license and click a button to acknowledge they agree with the license. If they don't agree with the license, they don't click the link and go somewhere else. (It doesn't use cookies or server-side anything.)

                                  It all goes back to why a website operator gets to dictate what software (a user agent, plugins, etc) runs or doesn't on MY machine.

                                  For me, I run defeat tools. Anti-DRM and DRM strippers. I have a cloudflare defeat container. I have a Anubis defeat container. Paywall defeat container. And I also run bypass-paywalls-complete over from gitflic.ru (Russian github). I run these tools because this is what makes the web usable. And its terrible I have to, but also a necessity.

                                  I also use https://hister.org/ personally. Has all my history and webpages and everything. Saves and scrapes as I browse. Also has LLM features and API so I can also send my agents when Im watching stuff.

                                  "Abuse" is a common one, of which I soundly reject. My computer. My user agent. My rules on my side. If you don't want to share, then by all means, sudo systemctl disable nginx && sudo systemctl stop nginx.

                                    @tante What kind of software are you running/what does it do?

                                    (Genuinely interested, I am not a coder.)

                                      @monoxyd I run iocaine https://iocaine.madhouse-project.org/ .
                                      It's quite good at detecting bots and serves them efficiently generated texts based on Marx's "Das Kapital" and historic Luddite writings. It tries to trap those bots in tarpits made of "nonsense" text to
                                      a) keep them away from actual content (therefore saving resources)
                                      b) keeps them busy so at least that one bot is not harming some other website while I keep it busy
                                      c) poison their data set

                                      It's not always easy to determine, just how effective these processes are but it does keep those bots away from hammering very expensive endpoints (with database queries) on my server.

                                      (if you search for "tante.cc" on bing.com for example you will see texts that do not correspond to the actual website text because the bing crawler was poisoned)

                                          @monoxyd in the last 2 months I have generated about 257 GB of content through iocaine that crawlers sucked in instead of my website. That is massively more than actual readers produced as traffic.
