    @Epic_Null @futurebird
    If the apocalypse robs us of style, then what would we even be saving? What would be the point?

    @jargoggles @futurebird The Non-Apocolypse has robbed us of style and labled it "buisness casual"

      @futurebird I'd have loved to do this, especially at that age. At one point my dad played around with bookbinding a bit. I remember him making me a tiny bound notebook (maybe 1" x ¾"), and later I started (but never finished) binding some magazines together like a book, treating them as the signatures.

          I wonder whether any of your students are having that epiphany that comes with growing a bean plant

            @futurebird although who needs binding? Jack Kerouac didn't.

                @futurebird Ever read this 114 year old Jack London story, "The Scarlet Plague", about a post-apocalypse future where the Youngs don't believe the old people who try to tell them what civilization was? It's a bit underedited inho but brilliantly prescient and ridiculously relevant today: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/21970

                  @futurebird a young girl at church the other day was advised by her mother to ask me about parakeets -- i've had many over the years, and the girl is interested in getting a pair. so we sat down and she asked me very good questions about bird care etc, and she asked where she might find more info. i had to caution her about trusting online sources for pet care as it's all AI slop now. i picked up an old copy of the same book i've had for years, going to give it to her next sunday.

                  is this what all the technological advances of the last 40 years have come to? "don't trust the internet, kid, go read a book instead"...?!?!?!

                      I rather love this —books can also be a foundation for collecting and sharing other arts. Quite enabling.

                          @futurebird My 3rd grader and I actually did some book binding over the summer. Basically a coptic stitch with leather straps and an exposed spine.

                          She had a lot of fun and she has now asked about binding different books. Once you know that it's a thing you can "just make", it really changes how you view books at all.

                          Even if it's just "fold paper and staple the middle", it really changes the sense of what it means to create these essential things.

                            @ratiogeraet @rothko

                            Looking at the post-consumer apocalypse wasteland paintings of of Simon Stålenhag I must say again that he's a visionary SF artist.

                            It's not just the sense of a cataclysm but the nature of it suggested by the wreckage.
