@EUCommission how bizarre to be promoting a random VC-funded social network when you've barely put the same effort into promoting Mastodon. This has a shady feeling to it.
@EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu @Gina@fosstodon.org It looks like W locks you into big tech's closed phone ecosystem, too, and with a smartphone-mandatory ID check, no less.
[Edit:] Appears to be mandatory, judging by the language on their site (e.g. "W is built on verified human users").
"The decentralised W Identity app" ...what?

We believe true digital sovereignty thrives on a competitive, contestable, open ecosystem where diverse platforms co-exist.
Today, we’re expanding our presence to W, the new social media. By being on W, we want to boost alternatives and support all efforts toward a decentralised web.
And we continue to invest into our presence on the Fediverse!
Gee... the list keeps growing:

http://wsocial.eu/Here's a wild take: fund fediverse instances instead.

@matteofortini The problem is that politicians and parts of the EU being on W now, don't want to join the Fediverse, e.g. Ursula von der Leyen prefers walled profit-seeking gardens again. Politicians like her seem to have learned nothing about open and public structures.
People may say, I don't need her here. But these politicians urge journalists into the walled gardens because the public has a right to know about their posts.
@EUCommission@NatureMC @matteofortini @EUCommission
Well said. I did a toot about "Old Europe" mindset. In times of change.. "business as usual". I think Ursula von der Leyen is a perfect example of that, and does not provide the kind of more progressive leadership the EU needs at this point in time.

@EUCommission It's kind of crazy that Mastodon never got this kind of promotion and endorsement, unlike this 4 month old platform that came out of nowhere.
There's no money in Mastodon, unlike something a VC/techbro wants to sell them...

Whether here on our Mastodon server, or on ATproto with new W profile
@ec.europa.eu – we look forward to staying connected with you.@EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu Thanks for not deleting your presence in this decentralized network, at least. (Please don't....)

@EUCommission no thanks, we have this already

@Gargron From what I've read, W is super sketchy and run by a for profit organization. That means they're either planning on selling customer data or feeding ads. No thank you very much.
They want photo ID before people can post there. It's in the last paragraph of this story:
https://www.pcmag.com/news/w-emerges-as-x-alternative-aimed-at-combating-systemic-disinformationIf I lived in Europe, I'd give them a pass.

@EUCommission The European Commission has gone rogue and has no legitimacy in my eyes.

And why did they not call it “Y”?
@Gormfull @ayo @Gargron @EUCommission yes Y?

Yes.
This "W" thing is explicitly not one of those, though, is it?

@Gargron @EUCommission The new platform explicitly caters to the far right and fascists though, sooo ...

@Gargron @EUCommission Easier to do surveillance on a closed platform.

@EUCommission W is not an independent digital space.
And it's really telling that certain politicians, like von der Leyen, opt to have a presence on the network that doesn't really exist yet, isn't really available to anyone yet, and will be really quite hard to access for everyone when it does; as opposed to an actually European, actually open, actually independent, actually federated network
