A strong Europe needs independent digital spaces.

@EUCommission Could you just explain where W is decentralized as well as an open ecosystem? And how do you define independent?
And aren’t commercial goals and public responsibility slightly conflicting interests, not that politicians seems to have a problem with that?
At least the first and hopefully the last statement remains true.
@blackDragonfly@techhub.social @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu It seems to be based on ATProtocol, a fully decentralized and opensource one.

We believe true digital sovereignty thrives on a competitive, contestable, open ecosystem where diverse platforms co-exist.
Today, we’re expanding our presence to W, the new social media. By being on W, we want to boost alternatives and support all efforts toward a decentralised web.
And we continue to invest into our presence on the Fediverse!

I am Not in the EU, but even so, I think you and others should see https://blog.elenarossini.com/w-social-public-institutions-and-the-theater-of-european-digital-sovereignty/ @EUCommission

@Gargron From what I've read, W is super sketchy and run by a for profit organization. That means they're either planning on selling customer data or feeding ads. No thank you very much.
@mike @Gargron @EUCommission Probably both...
-
They want photo ID before people can post there. It's in the last paragraph of this story:
https://www.pcmag.com/news/w-emerges-as-x-alternative-aimed-at-combating-systemic-disinformationIf I lived in Europe, I'd give them a pass.
@mike @weirdfoodie @Gargron @EUCommission Control, control, control … They could have better called it C.

No, not following you there. Wrong move. Also: ewwww (W is centralized, for-profit, closed-source).
You are more than welcome to stay here among us and continue investing in the #fediverse.

@EUCommission I'll pass thanks, and stay on here....
-
@EUCommission I was on the waitlist for W but I won't be signing up. They promised to be open and all they did was take open source code and close it. That doesn't build trust and if they are willing to lie before they even launch I don't trust them with my id
@daemon_byte @EUCommission Absolutely - don't trust any social media with your ID....

@EUCommission really bad move. there’s activitypub and mastodon for what you want to achieve.
-
@EUCommission It's kind of crazy that Mastodon never got this kind of promotion and endorsement, unlike this 4 month old platform that came out of nowhere.
@Gargron @EUCommission If I didn't know better, which I don't, I'd suspect money changed hands.

@chewie@mammut.gogreenit.net @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu @blackDragonfly@techhub.social You can selfhost any part of the ATMosphere. You can host your PDS, your AppView, your relay. Eurosky is a fully European PDS, BlackSky is one too.
You have alternative content to microblogging, like Peertube for ActivityPub.
During the recent major BlueSky downtime, all other non BlueSky system continue to work without trouble. -

Why bother?
