Just updated my iPad.

Just updated my iPad. It wanted me to take a photo of a credit card. I did not let it. It then told me I might not be able to access certain things. The future is fucking shit.
@joeress you might need to be over 18 to open an account but you can add whomever you want as a user. When I was 13 I had a credit card. I have an 8 year old as a user so they can build credit now, even though I shredded the card right after it was activated.

@joeress Any update to this?
-
@joeress … to be clear though, I fully agree, this is not the future we want(ed) and it is not good.
@andypiper @joeress We all need to push back on this hard!
-
@joeress in all fairness this is the govt, not the fruity company. And yes, the future does not look rosy. It's rotten to the core.

@joeress If it's one of those things where they want to charge and refund a dollar I usually just give them a Privacy card ( privacy\.com ) number instead of my real one, then pause the card as soon as I get the refund back so they can't use it in the future without permission.

I've said it before and I'll say it again; these companies are gonna have to pry this information from my fucking cold & bloody corpse with a crowbar before I hand it over to them. Fuck this Technofascist bullshit.
A BETTER WORLD IS POSSIBLE, AND IT DOESN'T BEGIN WITH A SURVEILLANCE STATE!!!

@joeress I got an email from Google recently saying they'd switched off/on certain things in my account because they couldn't confirm that I was "an adult" (things like setting on safe search, etc.). Thing is, I've had that Google account for about 20 years now ...

Instead of going through their age verification bs routine I logged into my Google account and switched off/on the things they'd changed. Seems to have worked.

@joeress YEa I got something like that on the iPad I got from a grant. NOpe.

@melroy The problem isn't Apple. The UK government is requiring all companies to perform such age checks, and many other places like the EU and California are following suit. Companies - and even open source projects - have to obey the law, even if they or their users disagree with it.
The law doesn't specifically require companies ask for credit cards - and that's a pretty poor way to handle age verification. However, other methods also are bad for their own reasons, requiring users to either submit to a racist and invasive face scan, or provide an ID.Apple and Microsoft are horrible companies, but for other reasons. Moreover, as we are seeing with California, open source operating systems are also required to comply. Software developers should not and can not simply pick and choose what laws they obey.
Its unfair to blame them for the UK's poorly written mass surveillance and censorship legislation. The blame lies with the UK government, and with every other government mandating this. -

@joeress nope. Full stop. No device or platform I use will ever force me into fascist surveillance capitalism, and Ill stop using any device or platform if there is no way to break it, work around it, disable it. Ive already done this with that thing people call "the smartphone". No more smartphones in our home, and there will not be for the foreseeable future.

@dshan It is pretty funny they don't consider 20yo account to be owned by an adult.

@JorisMeys @dch @joeress Yeah, seems to me that you should be able to get a stamp from the local constabulary.
@yoasif @JorisMeys @dch @joeress
UK driver’s licence gives valid from date…not that I’m suggesting you give Apple or anyone else your driving licence details

Meanwhile, my wife keeps having the same nagware on her iPhone…she’s 74 FFS

@bradthornborrow It has nothing to do with Brexit. Some EU countries are doing the same.

@joeress
Your governemnt is a fucking joke. They censored fucking ninja stars. Police confiscate butter knives. People get arrested, jailed and fined for saying naughty words. You cucks have no fucking rights. You all need to grow a backbone and revolt for your rights back already.America is worse. They've got less freedom of speech than the Brits. American government is banning non state-approved routers so they can watch everything you do online. So glad I don't live there.
