Just updated my iPad.

Just updated my iPad. It wanted me to take a photo of a credit card. I did not let it. It then told me I might not be able to access certain things. The future is fucking shit.
@joeress especially since apple uses every cut down on nsfw to make their eco system more walled

@imjustmsk oh yeah definitely not

@melroy The problem isn't Apple. The UK government is requiring all companies to perform such age checks, and many other places like the EU and California are following suit. Companies - and even open source projects - have to obey the law, even if they or their users disagree with it.
The law doesn't specifically require companies ask for credit cards - and that's a pretty poor way to handle age verification. However, other methods also are bad for their own reasons, requiring users to either submit to a racist and invasive face scan, or provide an ID.Apple and Microsoft are horrible companies, but for other reasons. Moreover, as we are seeing with California, open source operating systems are also required to comply. Software developers should not and can not simply pick and choose what laws they obey.
Its unfair to blame them for the UK's poorly written mass surveillance and censorship legislation. The blame lies with the UK government, and with every other government mandating this.@iampytest1 @melroy I'm old enough to remember when software developers violated unjust laws and often got those laws changed in response.

@joeress it's not even law yet, is it? Yeah this is crap

@andypiper @joeress We all need to push back on this hard!
@TheVampireFishQueen @andypiper @joeress Ask the purchased money back of the iPad and ditch the device. If everyone does, things will change. Can you image to break down the core business of Apple, selling iPads?

@joeress Fediverse world is better world.

America is worse. They've got less freedom of speech than the Brits. American government is banning non state-approved routers so they can watch everything you do online. So glad I don't live there.
@geoffl @rusty_shackleford @joeress That one gets even funnier. The only US made routers at all are some Starlink ones.
So basically America banned all ISPs except Musk's.
The billionaire needs _more_...

@joeress
Your governemnt is a fucking joke. They censored fucking ninja stars. Police confiscate butter knives. People get arrested, jailed and fined for saying naughty words. You cucks have no fucking rights. You all need to grow a backbone and revolt for your rights back already. -

@divVerent @geoffl @rusty_shackleford @joeress You cannot even build a grill scrubber solely from US material: https://youtu.be/3ZTGwcHQfLY?is=MmWU179QPZ7miiT7

@joeress That's BS. I never set up ApplePay on an iPad. It's a stupid default and they should REALLY tone down the language.
But, I mean, this is Apple, the only vaguely less rapacious walled garden that wants to own your life lock, stock and barrel.
-
@joeress in all fairness this is the govt, not the fruity company. And yes, the future does not look rosy. It's rotten to the core.
-
@jimmylittle @feoh @joeress Sadly, the EU might be trying the same route: https://leminal.space/post/31858818/21120139 in July 2026. Gone under the radar of press outlets, sadly. (Or perhaps I misunderstood, I'm not an EU regulations expert at all.)
-
Has Apple (or other OS companies) done such lobbying in favor of age verification legislation? Or is it mainly social media companies?
That would certainly undermine my original argument if Apple was actively supporting this legislation rather than simply meeting their legal obligations.Thanks
Apple has been sidestepping privacy and interoperability regulations for years and now are suddenly quite eager to comply. Really tells you everything you need to know about them.

@bradthornborrow @joeress plenty of EU countries are pushing for the same shit

@menos @dch @joeress I don’t think that’s right — certainly it wasn’t the case when I set mine up. Family Sharing does implicitly require the organiser to register a credit card with Apple in order to purchase the content they will be sharing, but it never asked for ID. Also, it is possible to have an Apple Account with no payment method associated with it; it’s just not the default, and not entirely obvious at that, but the reason to have the account is to use the Store…

@joeress This is a new requirement in the UK which Apple have popped into the latest update without forewarning.
Luckily (!) for me, as I've had an Apple account since forever, they were willing to accept I am probably over 18 without the credit card info.

@feoh @joeress Nothing to do with Apple this time, it's the British government. It's the same government that tried to forbid Apple to do stronger encryption for data on Apple accounts around a year ago.
Your comment to me is proof that haters are gonna hate no matter what, you didn't even bother to inform yourself before commenting. -

@joeress reminds me when facebook used to randomly lock your account and then ask for government ID as a proof of identity. Don't know if they still do this. Haven't used the spyware in almost a decade.
