I feel sorry for people who spent thousands on World Cup tickets only to have their visas revoked, but a lot of us have been saying for a long time not to come here.

We have a fascist regime here. People are being put in camps without due process. Visitors are screened for their political views, which may be why some football fans are being turned away.
These people should consider themselves lucky they are losing only their money, and not their liberty.
Going to #FIFA2026?
You wouldn’t have gone to the 1936 Olympics, would you?

the end of visa-free tourist travel between the US & the UK is not really something that be celebrated as "they shouldn't a worn that dress"
when peoples have enjoyed a right of visa-free travel for their entire lives, to suddenly have those rights snatched away, it's not the time to say, it's somehow the tourists' fault
the big lie was told that ESTA wasn't a visa & wouldn't stop anyone from traveling who wasn't a terrorist, those of us who objected to ESTA were not heard

For every event that is still held in the US, there should be an alternative event in a free country. So ... has anybody heard of an alternative soccer world cup?

I'm sorry, but I've no idea what you're talking about. Who is saying these things?

@bodhipaksa If you were trying to get here to spend money at a fucking sportsball event rather than to get home or escape something worse or be with people you care about, getting your visa revoked is absolutely the best possible outcome. Stop fucking coming here and propping up our failed fascist state if you don't absolutely need to.

@bodhipaksa I'm not gonna pretend losing thousands of dollars and having to deal with the knock-on effects of last minute changes to scheduling isn't going to suck, to say the least. I recognise you don't seem to either.
I also recognise that telling them "we told you so" as one of those people who have been saying this since November 2024 isn't going to change what happened.
What will hopefully change it is if now that it's directly impacted these people, they take this as the cautionary tale it should be and join us in the chorus telling the rest of the world, "stay the fuck away from the States. It's not safe here for anyone to visit."

@bodhipaksa @iamdavidobrien As an American, I hate to say it, but what did they expect?

@bodhipaksa @iamdavidobrien As an American, I hate to say it, but what did they expect?
@lhauser @iamdavidobrien It sounds like they expected to be visiting a normal country, which suggests they either haven't been paying attention of think they are "special" in some way.

They thought that US borders was only a problem for people of color. They didn't expect, as white people, to run into problems.
Subconsciously [EDIT: or consciously] they thought white privilege would protect them and they'd be welcome.
Like those two young Danish women who were detained some months ago and were like "We didn't think it would happen to us".

@disorderlyf I guess it takes time for it to sink in that this is no longer a normal country, that there's a regime in charge that revels in arbitrary cruelty, and that this is not exclusively directed toward people with brown skin but also any perceived critic.
This is no longer a normal country and white Britons are not somehow exempt from all this. And yes it sucks for them to have lost a lot of money. But I guess it's sinking in now, and as you say, hopefully others will see the truth.

@Mab_813 @disorderlyf I'm not sure it's particularly subconscious.

You're right. I guess I was thinking back to that fediverse account that tried to argue with me that there was no way the two white Danish women had thought they could rely on white privilege because they probably didn't even think of themselves as "white".

@Mab_813 @disorderlyf Yeah, part of privilege is not having to be aware that you have it, so in that sense it’s unconscious.
But I’m sure there are a lot of white people who think it’s safe for them to visit the US because they assume their skin color will protect them.

@bodhipaksa I don’t feel sorry for them. They thought they would be special because they spent $? Nah, that’s all the more reason for the facist grifter to revoke their visa.
Now his buddies who own the hotel rooms they booked get to keep their money and re-rent those rooms to someone else.
