    @dirkhh we need a version of this pic but the center is burned through.

    As you can see in my alt text... I do think that the color choice of essentially "ash" for the center is pretty instructive...

      I am sorry. And you are at "sunny garden" (I know, not funny today... but it's kinda hard to resist).
      Please tell me you either have A/C or have access to a space with A/C...

        @dirkhh I’m in the grey bit – south of England. When I picked up the kid from school earlier, the closest equivalent I can think of was Florida, although with a bit of a sharper heat and less humidity.

        I’ve had the portable a/c on almost all day and it’s no longer fully coping. The office is now merely less awful than the rest of the house. (Also worried about the 11yo. Her room is already over 32°C and will be hotter by the time she goes to bed.)

            @dirkhh I'll be able to cool the house down a bit, and keep the windows covered, so it should be liveable but not comfortable at least. And I plan to spend a couple of hours in the library air con in the morning!

            Matthew's school is closing at lunchtime, which will at least mean cycling 3 miles home at 1pm rather than 3:30 !

              @craiggrannell
              yeah - most portable units are limited to the temperature differential they can manage. Heck, even a typical whole house A/C has clear limits. A couple of years ago when we reached 45C in Portland we ended up setting the indoor temperature to 28C and that had the A/C run essentially non-stop.

              Good luck to you and your family. Worst case maybe you all can sleep in the same room? Better than trying to sleep in 32C (which feels impossible to me - but that's also a bit of having lived with A/C for the last 25 years)

                    @dirkhh Thanks. I managed to get reasonable airflow (using fans/open windows) through one bedroom last night and so it dropped below 30 after midnight. Dunno about tonight. Because of how far north we are, we have under seven hours of “not daylight” right now. Combined with an overnight low of 22°C, it’s all feeling a bit bleh.

                    Bizarre to see the long-range forecast suggesting that the *highs* all next week will barely reach the low for the next two days.

                      @dirkhh, what's the temperature scale for that? (It looks a bit off to me as I'm just about within the grey area but the forecast for tomorrow says 26℃.)

                                @dirkhh I know and you're right. I'm just being sarcastic. In all probability and these heatwaves continue for the next decades, the warm gulfstream will collapse due to melting glaciers on Greenland adding to much fresh water to the AMOC.
                                In that case Western Europe will get the same climate as Canada. Much dryer and colder...

                                        that would be seriously painful to sit on.

                                          is it a good sign when the national weather service runs out of pre-assigned colors to depict temperature?
