    @grumble209 I can’t wait for the blogto headline “This hot cocktail is the newest trend in the streets of Toronto!”

      @renata I thought the actual reason was that Doug Ford got mad seeing cyclists pass him as he got driven to work. Which is why the bike lane they are removing is specifically the one that is on his way to work.

        @renata WTF?!

        '…Waymo told safe street advocates that bike lane-awareness is “too high a bar,” because customers want to be dropped off in them.’

        I’m failing to see why legally this is even remotely relevant. It would be like allowing them to speed or run red lights because customers want to go faster.

              @crzwdjk @renata This absolutely has his grubby little fingers all over this. It's such an easy win for the right wing populist leader. It's like a one-page AI witten document and Step. 7 is "Go after bike lanes, and make sure to privatise as much public money as possible while you're at it."

                @renata I never liked them, but I didn’t hate Waymo’s as an SF biker, because at first they respected all the laws, never drove nor parked in bike lanes, always signaled, and were easily predictable.

                Sometime early 2024 is when they started intentionally making illegal maneuvers, and using bike lanes.

                          @zed @renata If memory serves, they started patterning waymos after actual human drivers instead of strictly rule driven.

                            @renata I realize you don't need any more convincing, but holy shit, waymo is a plague. Worst, to me, is that with all their cameras, they're traveling surveillance machines. That's why you always see them burning at big protests here - it's not random property destruction, it's self-defense.

                              @crzwdjk @renata can we somehow organize, once the bike lane is gone, so we're always in front of him in the car lane when he goes to work. Like someone is outside his home and signals people that he's leaving for work. Then cyclists are positioned along his route to pull in front of him and ride real slow.

                                    @renata They are a nuisance here in San Francisco. I've experienced them blocking the entrance to my Cancer Hospital when I arrive for an appointment, and they're still there when I leave.

                                    I'm in survivor care now. But so many other patients aren't doing as well, and having the entrance blocked is an ordeal for many.

                                    Not to mention their freezing when we had a black out. They just sat there, unable to make left turns without a functioning street light.

                                      @renata WTF?!

                                      '…Waymo told safe street advocates that bike lane-awareness is “too high a bar,” because customers want to be dropped off in them.’

                                      I’m failing to see why legally this is even remotely relevant. It would be like allowing them to speed or run red lights because customers want to go faster.

                                      @Chigaze @renata So those who use them ARE as big an asshole has any who allows them on the street, as well as the company.

                                          @Chigaze @renata It was recently changed but Waymo couldn’t get tickets in California. There may be other places where driverless vehicles cannot get a ticket.

                                          Remember that these types of violations by AVs aren’t a momentary lack of judgement or attention but a design choice that was debated in meetings by multiple people
