      @jerry that's the villain's plot in TWO Bond movies! Well... more Die Another Day than Diamonds Are Forever, but still.

            @jerry certainly this would never malfunction and "accidentally" put a 3 mile wide ray of sunshine across a big arc of the planet in the middle of the night now would it? As fascinating as a thing this would be to experience, the whole thing just seems wasteful for how disruptive and potential to go wrong it has.
            Seems like a big mirror to just leave up there too

                @jerry I've just finished a scifi novel where one of these malfunctions (well, sabotage), destroy a human base and sets parts of Antarctica on fire.

                I'm not exactly thrilled about this.

                  @jerry how can we speed up global warming ? Increase fossil fuel use, burn all trees, reflect the sun to earth on the night side - well done humanity

                    @jerry

                    It's a staggeringly poor idea.

                    If it wasn't for the likelihood of collateral damage, I would hope that it would make a good surface to space interceptor target 🤔

                      @jerry The Kessler-syndrome will have to fix that. I just can no longer imagine how to avoid collisions.

                        @jerry it appears we are at the stage of capitalism where rich people, who have been slightly inconvienced by it being night time, will be able to disturb every living thing for 3 miles.

                        The arrogance is astounding

                        We need to tax these people out of existence

                        And we need better teaching about biological clocks

                          @jerry I can't believe we just have to accept that on a planetary scale. Like there has to be some way the UN should just be able to say no.

                          This is not US matter this is a world thing this can't just be one country giving a go and we are good...

                              @jerry Yep. Prof Sam Lawler has been writing some great articles on this exact stupidity. they are worth a read.

                              sundogplanets@mastodon.social is her handle if you are so inclined.
