@sundogplanets Makes sense. Unfortunately it will only get worse it seems too. With unnaturally bright LEDs and EVEN more satellites like that company trying to put mirrors in space. Billionaires really ONLY care about that bit of more money and power. It's sad to think about.

@sundogplanets Yes exactly. I also came across this article (on mastodon) which I think more people should read about “urban lighting” & how we’re not doing it correctly. I found it interesting (and not surprising to me) that there is significant evidence that “crime” doesn’t really “go down” because of “lighting up the night”.

@sundogplanets For a girl who grew up in the dark (and has excellent cat vision
) I always thought that “night lights” were annoying & made vision harder. Apparently I’m not wrong. Also, I always thought it was quite an elaborate excuse to “have large lights on all night” because “crime is less” -

We're always trying to get more dark sky in our city but the people who are scared of everything want even more lights! It's horrible for birds migrating across the lake and gives my spouse midrange, ugh

Cities have been that way for a long time. I remember going with Scouts (half a century ago) and being absolutely awe struck at how many stars were in the night sky because I lived in the city.

I live more out in the country, and I posted on here maybe a year ago that I thought I was seeing more things that were not stars/planets in the night sky and maybe they were satellites. I was alarmed by them. People came up with reasons why they were something else, like streetlights reflecting, etc. There are no streetlights on my street. After learning more from @sundogplanets, (thank you!)I realized that they may very well be satellites. So many concerns that for so many reasons.

@sundogplanets I spent a week at Wadi Rum about 25 years ago and it was literally eye-opening. Living in Bavaria we still have areas with less light pollution, but standing in the desert in absolute silence and seeing what people saw thousands of years ago had a profound effect.

@sundogplanets I fondly remember my last 'dark sky' experience. It was on a horse pack trip in the Washington State Cascades. I got up in the middle of the night to look for a tree that needed watering. There was no moon and the Milky Way was glorious. It was hard to go back to the tent to sleep.

@sundogplanets I remember, as a child, lying down on the ground at night, looking up and it changing my perception of gravity. The sensation stopped being looking "up" and became looking out. Felt like you could fall into the sky forever.
Even during daytime I can still get that sensation a bit if I lie like that. Once you've felt it, it stays with you. Feels important that people still get to have that.

When I was a kid, decades ago, an uncle had 10 acres with a nice cabin, in the mountains, a few hours from Buffalo. No plumbing or electricity, but the sky was glorious. Other than camping in the Pine Barrens, it was the only light pollution free view I've had. I grew up 1/2 hrs from Philly. -

Or by using the likes of Google Earth. That did it for me back in the early 2000s when it was a desktop application.

"Oh, wow... Are there always this many stars??" my classmate who'd recently moved to eastern Oregon from Los Angeles asked, as we stood there in the parking lot gazing upwards.... from DIRECTLY UNDER STREETLAMPS.
"Well," I began, "First you need to get fifty miles from any major cities. Then, give your pupils about two hours to adjust.... THEN we can start to talk about how many stars there really are."
