Oof. My dark sarcasm levels have shot through the roof and entered orbit. Time to sign off for the night.

@geolaw @sundogplanets I’m really referring to the issue of overloading orbit making space stuff ostensibly impossible.

What are these metals doing to our upper atmosphere after de-orbit? At one point, we'd have insisted on studying this extensively before launching tens of thousands of satellites that will eventually come back down ... now, when you're a trillionaire, they just let you do it.

But DON'T WORRY EVERYONE, the FCC will almost certainly approve SpaceX's one million satellite filing soon, so this will seem like nothing!

@sundogplanets They say they have to do 1000 evasive maneuvers per day. I would guess that as the number of manuvers needed would go up as the square of the number of objects, since every satellite has to avoid every other one. If so, if they make their fleet 10x larger which is less than they plan to, wouldn't they need to do 100k panic moves per day?

Don't worry, a single EMP in low earth orbit should take them all out, right?

@stuartyeates @sundogplanets Multiple EMP would be needed since they encompass the earth in a shell. Then the satellites would not be able to be controlled for collision avoidance. Hello Kessler Syndrome.

Better to just ask Grok to take control and deorbit them all into the ocean at Point Nemo.

SpaceX just got approved for 15,000 more direct-to-cell satellites: https://www.fcc.gov/document/spacex-approved-ngso-mss-system-direct-device-services

Giant, bright, radio-loud. Fuck. I just saw SO MANY SATELLITES in my sky. Guess there will be more. And then lots of debris.

While I hate Elon musk, I think the idea of starlink is not a bad one. And yes there desperately needs to be some public tracking for satellites, much like commercial aircraft.

@sundogplanets Why the fuck is the US approving that crap over our (EU or any other) sky and why is the EU eating it? Rhetorical, of course 🙄
