Everybody has to coordinate with Starlink because SPACEX CONTROLS ORBIT.

Don't worry, a single EMP in low earth orbit should take them all out, right?
@stuartyeates @sundogplanets Multiple EMP would be needed since they encompass the earth in a shell. Then the satellites would not be able to be controlled for collision avoidance. Hello Kessler Syndrome.
Better to just ask Grok to take control and deorbit them all into the ocean at Point Nemo. -
@ldmay65 @sundogplanets but not in the classroom. Teacher, leave them kids alone (all in all, you're just another brick in the wall).
@ldmay65 @sundogplanets the irony of one of the people I mentioned being at a university.
-
@sundogplanets They say they have to do 1000 evasive maneuvers per day. I would guess that as the number of manuvers needed would go up as the square of the number of objects, since every satellite has to avoid every other one. If so, if they make their fleet 10x larger which is less than they plan to, wouldn't they need to do 100k panic moves per day?
@not2b @sundogplanets Just need to coat all the starlink satellites in bacon fat so they can slide easily past one another. -
Everybody has to coordinate with Starlink because SPACEX CONTROLS ORBIT. That's against the Outer Space Treaty.
Your engineering challenge, SpaceX, is to provide your services with fewer satellites. Not yell at everyone else for having satellites too.
-
Oof. My dark sarcasm levels have shot through the roof and entered orbit. Time to sign off for the night.
@sundogplanets ...where you can take direct action against Starlink?!!
-
SpaceX just got approved for 15,000 more direct-to-cell satellites: https://www.fcc.gov/document/spacex-approved-ngso-mss-system-direct-device-services
Giant, bright, radio-loud. Fuck. I just saw SO MANY SATELLITES in my sky. Guess there will be more. And then lots of debris.
@sundogplanets Doesn't SpaceX already have more satellites in orbit than any other organization by a fair margin at this point?

@sundogplanets Jesus Christ this is worse than I thought. https://orbitalradar.com/satellites-by-operator

@sundogplanets I would very much like for SpaceX to stop existing.

@sundogplanets
While I hate Elon musk, I think the idea of starlink is not a bad one. And yes there desperately needs to be some public tracking for satellites, much like commercial aircraft. -
@sundogplanets We should rebrand SpaceX
️ == SpaceTrash
️@stux @sundogplanets It is already the case considering how trash X is

@sundogplanets Well said!

-
@sundogplanets @syvash @f4grx these bastards would definitely use a Kessler event as an excuse for WWIII
@KanaMauna @sundogplanets @syvash nah I meant I just wish a kessler syndrome for the megaconstellations, not the others. Impossible, I know.

@sundogplanets Why the fuck is the US approving that crap over our (EU or any other) sky and why is the EU eating it? Rhetorical, of course

@sundogplanets SpaceX is nearing towards the FO phase of the FAFO cycle.
-
@mathify bold of you to assume we're getting through the next 100 years with all our toys intact. @sundogplanets

Oof. My dark sarcasm levels have shot through the roof and entered orbit. Time to sign off for the night.
@sundogplanets I’d like to see other countries all sue the USA for polluting the skies we all share. Maybe that would give them pause on this “give the billionaires anything, everything their shrivelled little hearts desire.

@sundogplanets Musk's thing is always first mover advantage to dictate markets. I would not expect anything else here.

@sundogplanets Shoving so many sats into orbit is just plain overbuilding.
A real solution would use terrestrial infrastructure when available, and use satellite as a fallback. This would reduce the need for nearly as many satellites, and vastly improve performance.
Such a solution has already been ratified into the 5G NR standards with support for NTNs (non-terrestrial networks). This will provide the required handoff, without making low-earth-orbit unusable via satellite collisions.
