Today, the Commission has preliminarily found TikTok in breach of the DSA, for its addictive design.

This includes features such as infinite scroll, autoplay, push notifications, and its highly personalised recommender system.

TikTok seems to fail to implement reasonable, proportionate and effective measures to mitigate risks stemming from its addictive design.

At this stage, the Commission considers that TikTok needs to change the basic design of its service.

@HennaVirkkunen This is a fabulous breakthrough. No longer the emperor's new clothes ... expect gigantic backlash as precious profits - made on the back of the addictiveness - will reduce. Heaven forbid!

@HennaVirkkunen infinite scrolling probably isn't the biggest issue with that "platform". Just ban it, but please do it for real reasons 😄

thank you! Now on to demolishing the international trafficking of personal data, otherwise known as Real-Time Bidding, which we have known for years is completely void of a legal basis

@HennaVirkkunen I certainly recognize those things together do make for an addictive experience. That the EU requires effective mitigation via time management controls is interesting.

I suppose these should indeed have some sensible defaults that try to discourage people from staying with the app indefinitely and aren't too trivially dismissed... I wonder what ideas @dansup has regarding features like these for the @loops platform.

@HennaVirkkunen Indeed, there are lots of things that are wrong with TikTok. Luckily, the Fediverse has an alternative to TikTok called Loops, that is gaining pace, and is welcoming new users.

@Enea90 @HennaVirkkunen loops has an algorithms all algorithms can be addictive even the ethical one. Loops also have infinite scrolling . Sorry but the arguments are bad and if loops get mainstream the EU will go after it

Precisely. The highly personalized recommendations are the key problem. And infinite scroll is an amplifier that makes that problem a couple magnitudes worse yet.

@Tuuktuuk @HennaVirkkunen Yup. The algorithm is the core problem, further amplified by infinite scroll. That's what the EU should lead with. Not "infinite scroll bad".

I absolutely agree with you on that.

But, there is a lack of understanding that SoMe can function without an algorithm. I believe the decision was made with that obliviousness.

@Tuuktuuk @HennaVirkkunen Social media existed before Facebook debuted the algorithm-driven timeline (think MySpace/Friendster). It wouldn't be bad to see a return to social media platforms that feel less like high-fructose corn syrup.
