My knowledge of this is only anecdotal, but my dear friend in Tehran is adamant that the protest has no roots outside the country. It is purely grass roots and is simply the obvious: they are socially, legally and economically oppressed as hell and the population - 50% of whom were born after the Islamic Revolution, are fucking sick of it.
Sick of the fucking tyranny.

They have 70% - SEVENTY PERCENT inflation on food. Over 100% on bread.
The IRG has their fingers in a ton of commercial ventures and there’s fuck all competition. Trump level corruption. And the hypocritical sanctimony of the modesty laws is incoherent.

But I do hope this is a warning to people in the US. Because Iranians have been living under this tyranny for 40+ years. Once you let a leadership get that much power to act with impunity, it’s insanely hard to get rid of it.
If you think this can’t happen to your country, you’re not paying attention.
