The trick of entering 0 no matter what phone-system AI asks, only entering customer number and such via keyboard instead of speaking, and answering only yes/no questions with actual words has worked for quite a few of these systems now.

@rootsandcalluses My local council has one of those systems where it wants you to say the option rather than just pressing a damn button, and it seems to have a lot of trouble with our distinctive regional accent. They should have trained it on an audiobook of "Larn Yersel' Geordie."

@beecycling In this case, the AI keeps asking for a summary of the issue. I press 0 no matter what they ask unless it's for my customer number or something like that. I don't speak. I only press 0. Usually that gets me where I need to be: to a human.

@beecycling Also: I now really want to listen to Larn Yersel

@rootsandcalluses Yeah, I've done that in the past. It's not so bad if there's only a couple of prompts to get past, and they only have a small number of options, but don't send me through six bloody levels, having to listen to ten bloody options.

@rootsandcalluses Geordie is a great accent and dialect. It's full of things like loan words from Old Norse, lots of pre-vowel shift pronounciations, influence from Scotland, slang and jargon from the coal-mining that used to be the heart of so many communities. Added to that, we're known for speaking very fast. So it can be one of the hardest UK regional accents for outsiders to understand. Not quite as hard as say, Glaswegian, but definitely one of the hardest of the English ones.

@beecycling Those systems have been a nightmare for a while. It has only gotten worse since AI.
I believe there is a combination of outsourcing the wait and work to the customer and actively trying to make it hard for customers to reach support going on. Adding AI into the powderkeg has only made this worse...

@beecycling Gotta listen to some Geordie. I love dialects and accents. Language is amazing.
