Yesterday I was helping my neighbor with her garden and a man walked by, nodding to us.

She told me she knew him. She was born in Amsterdam and seems to know pretty much everyone here and I feel extremely lucky to have her as a neighbor. She explained that he is Jona Oberski and he wrote a very famous book about his time in a nazi concentration camp as a child. It is called Kinderjaren.

I of course had to buy the English translation. I have barely started it. I am going to have a lot of feelings reading this. One of them is gratitude for living in a place that has such clear and present memories about what it is like to be occupied by nazis.

@ginabythebay I love that he overcame that and now can live in a beautiful city and nod to friendly neighbors. There’s hope.

@ginabythebay This is a wonderful reminder that we probably have no idea of the life experience of the people that live within a stone's throw of ourselves.

Be curious, be kind, be patient ...

@rhempel I have seen that channel! He is doing a different kind of machining than me. I respect it but am not myself very interested in manual machining.

@ginabythebay It's a lost art - my Dad had a machine shop and we didn't even have a digital readout on any machines 🙂

When I worked at the LEGO Group in Denmark I got to tour the machine shop - I looked for the milling machines and didn't see any ... they were there of course.

Beautiful 6 axis boxes that were able to do things that were impossible without tedious tool and work holding changes 40 years ago.

It's an amazing time to be alive, except for all the dumb stuff going on.

@rhempel I took manual machining at our local community college (they still require it for people who take machining classes). I just find that the skills involved in doing it well don't really align with the skills I have.

@ginabythebay The programmer in me loves the fact that really good CNC operators are all about using algorithms to reduce cycle time and to optimize tool changes.

If the Titans of CNC weren't so in your face with their videos it would be more relaxing to watch.

Are there any relaxing CNC channels worth watching?
