there's more to digital sensors than I knew until just this past week, when somebody told me you can turn an off-the-shelf DIY camera unit into an IR sensor simply by reversing the filtering on it.
Apparently almost every such camera comes with a filter that stops infrared & lets the sensor receive only visible light - but you can buy the reverse kind of filter off the shelf, too, and just swap it out & presto, IR sensor
