Divine light shining down on a lone tree.
Sometimes the Sun and tiny ice crystals high in the atmosphere create something called a sundog—a bright patch of light appearing beside the Sun, produced when sunlight is refracted and reflected by those ice crystals.
And apparently, I have a thing with doggies this morning. ^.-
In this particular moment, the sundog appeared almost as if a cloud was falling out of the sky, dripping down towards a lone tree in a cascade of remarkable rainbow colours.
It was incredibly bright, so I made two photographs.
The first shows the entire scene, using the Canon 5D Mark IV with the Sigma 100–400mm zoomed out to capture the wider landscape.
The second is zoomed right into the sundog itself. I adjusted the exposure for the intense brightness, which allowed the colours to stand out much more clearly against the dark sky.
Same phenomenon.
Two very different views.
Sometimes the atmosphere gives you something that looks almost impossible—and then you remember that physics can be pretty spectacular too.
