@daveybot Well, in fairness, those were a sign of wealth at one time, weren’t they? Only rich could afford them?

@CStamp @daveybot I learnt from a digression in this lovely podcast about a rental car that people used to rent pineapples.

“They cost thousands, so people would rent them and just walk around with it as a status symbol. Like: "Look at me, flexing on all you poor people, I got a pineapple and you don’t. I need you to see me walking around with this pineapple, but I can only have it so long because I got to get this thing back by 4 o’clock or they’ll charge me extra.”

@CiaraNi @CStamp @daveybot I learned a couple years ago that people rent rims - as in, car wheel rims - so we’re definitely the same critters we’ve always been.

@daveybot "We had the choice between windows on the ground floor or the pineapple dome. Easy decision."

@daveybot it's impressive but the lack of windows on the ground floor is worrying. (And weren't windows taxed? So a recurring expense, and therefore a bigger brag?)

@daveybot @arclight and apparently you can rent it... that's like the world's largest swinger beacon

As of 2024, one can rent the gardeners' quarters and the pineapple summerhouse as a holiday home.

@ChristineMalec I didn't know you could rent hot tubs! I can see that being great in a winter holiday season.

I wonder if that's country-specific. I've just done a quick DuckDuckGo and can't immediately see Hot Tub Rental in Denmark. On the other hand, I just learnt that you can rent a Hot Box sauna, which I never knew.

@WhiteCatTamer Great point about rental being the more sustainable option for many things. Less waste at all stages. And cheaper and handier for many people, if they only need something once or rarely. I live in a mixed-used city centre and we can rent tools, lifting trolleys and the like from the local hardware for anything from 2 hours to several months. A cheaper, more environmentally-friendly option.

@CStamp @ChristineMalec @johncormier @CiaraNi @daveybot Yeah, that sounds like a valuable service. XD Especially since you KNOW the people with the cash to buy a full fledged hottub will use them 12 days a year. Less waste…but maybe more biohazards…

There’s also the influencers renting sets designed to look like the interiors of private planes, and of course upscale kitchens, but that’s far less fun…

I'm learning so many new things! That is rather sad, really. Kind of pathetic. Almost making me experience influencer empathy.
