I like this. OH: The Fediverse is social media. TikTok, X, Facebook etc is algorithmic media. This catches the difference quite well. We should take the term social media back. It is about us, not their algorithms.

@jwildeboer I've been fighting for several decades to get the term "hacker" back with zero success. Not trying to dissuade you, but I would guess they are both lost forever.

@jwildeboer I've been on/off callinfg it "corporate social media" but this is more compact and gets the idea across

I do like the ring of "corpsomedia" though, in my head

@jwildeboer I like that distinction. Fits far better than „corporate social media“. Maybe we can find a similarly correct term that is a bit more catchy than „algorithmic“?

@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net I like the term "antisocial media", as I feel that expresses how they divide communities instead of building them. Fedi, by contrast, is prosocial 🙂

@jwildeboer While I think Fediverse is more 'social', I would be careful with claiming the term 'social media'. The term is tainted. Restrictions for the mainstream are currently being drafted all over the world, and I prefer Fedi not to be in their sight.

@jwildeboer I feel the term algorithmic is too innocent/harmless for what the corporations really tailor it for.

The goal of the algorithmic corporate feed is to

                  a) make people addicted to the feed and

                  b) continuously lower their attention span so they can show them more ads (I mean influence them) in ever shorter succession.

It is a very vicious and purely evil construct.

💯 on Fediverse is social media.

                  @themipper

Some of the new social media ban laws specifically apply to addictive feeds, for this reason.

But far too many do not, and impose verification requirements that are financially impossible for sites that *don't* exploit their users with addictive feeds. Those bans not only don't punish addictive social media companies, but reward them by shutting down their competitors (i.e. Fedi).

And all of them do nothing to protect adults from addiction.

@jwildeboer I have started referring to the Fedi as "social networking" as opposed to social MEDIA. When it becomes media, you actually lose the personal, social bit.

yes, that distinction between "media" and "network" seems real and important. It may even be identifiable mathematically 🤓 by looking into the topology of the network: Is it dominated by popular accounts that look for another channel / audience to push their content, who have vast numbers of passive followers (followers who never post, but at best boost and like)? Or do people feel empowered to join the discussion on a more equal basis?

@openrisk When I joined twitter in 2009 it was used almost exclusively to organise *IRL* networking. We had Twestivals, meet-ups, coffee mornings - great fun, great for freelancers and creatives, with lasting connection.

It was anything but media. It was when the journalists and a bit later the politicians joined that it started to become media.

@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net there is nothing "social" about "social media". call it something distinct like a "persona substrate" which is far more susinct imo.

@argv_minus_one @jwildeboer I think with the rise of an american administration that is unhinged the corporate tech Billionaires and coporations do not have to pretend any more and are becoming more and more unhinged as well.

And that can be seen everywhere and accelerates things a lot.

@argv_minus_one @jwildeboer oh I meant it in the sense that this unhinged admin and corporations have a strong ripple effect across the globe.
Them unleashing their army of lobbyist across the globe.

And we in Europe are no exception.
