    The #Guppe situation happened because all groups were on one server, so when that server went down all the groups did too.

    FediGroups is a good immediate solution for getting groups up and running again, but it's also a single server so it's vulnerable.

    As a long term solution we need to have groups hosted on many different servers. If one server goes down, groups on other servers could carry on.

      p.s. Group servers don't have to be Guppe, but they would have to be something that has similar functionality and is free open source software, so that many independent servers could be set up.

      FediGroups has a lot of features Guppe is missing, but unfortunately it's not FOSS. However, they do seem to be now considering it: https://fedigroups.social/@hello/115168082852342748

        @FediTips

        The situation with #Guppe wouldn't happen if it was really decentralized aka #p2p fault tolerant tech. Like #Namecoin , .ens IPNS #IPFS, or #nostr #pubky #ZeroNet

        @dandylover1
        ipns://seedit.eth plebbit.com hashchan.org are interesting.

        Meanwhile #Friendica & #Hubzilla have some groups too.

        also shout out to @newsmast , they host few communities, check them out.

        I've tried fedigroups.social & it's hard to use, unintutive & obscure. I see just a mastodon server there. It is not clear & obvsious from main home page how to list groups, posts inside groups, group members.

        With such trend no wonder why people look back to #Usenet. However I think #XMPP is more usable (it does have groups and proto social network inside too)

            @luciledt

            Well, this is the thing, if a platform uses just one server you by definition have no alternatives.

            This is part of the reason for encouraging people to host independent servers so that there are options.

                @cyborgnekosica

                It works like this:

                1. You follow a group
                2. Its conversations start appearing in your timeline
                3. If you want to post something to the group, just mention the group in your post
                4. If you want to stop seeing the group's posts, unfollow the group.

                  Piefed and Lemmy are literally designed for fediverse groups, wouldn't they be the most obvious choice for a replacement of guppe groups?

                    @nitrml @pepper0 @FediTips I forgot that Piefed has its own groups! I know you can follow others, but yes. That is an excellent idea. I joined and then really didn't do much with it.

                      They're slightly different platforms with slightly different use cases. Piefed etc are meant more for Reddit-type stuff.

                      "Groups" aren't necessarily the same thing on the internet, there are many different approaches which co-exist because there are different use cases.

                        @FediTips Do not forget that Guppe (and threadiverse software) has compatibility issues with many Fediverse software. Currently, only fedigroups.social, Hubzilla, and Friendica have the widest compatibility with other fediverse software.

                        If anything, currently hosting using Guppe isn't a good choice until those compatibility issues are fixed (which has been around for years). It is important if you want a true fediverse reach.

                          Guppe is FOSS while FediGroups currently isn't, so there's no way for people to self-host with FediGroups at the moment.

                          Are there any other self-hostable boosting group platforms you would recommend?
