14 years old in the early 00s and downloading games off Usenet. Shitty dialup took weeks to get anything and someone offered to send a CD. It still shocks me that a stack of CDs turned up at my house and I'm not the subject of a murder documentary.

@fesshole Around 1999, as a teen, I travelled solo to London and met up with a group of people I 'knew' from a newsgroup...
..and it was great. Sure, they were some real oddballs but on the whole a lovely bunch.

@gilester45 @fesshole absolutely doable still, e.g. with the Mastodon crowd. Ive met up with people from online several times in the past decades, only been murdered once or twice.
