@stefan @c_dan4th yep. I personally know several prominent artists, authors, and entertainers who were driven away from here by people enforcing these made up rules. The thinking (to the extent there’s actual thinking happening here) is that anyone who had a large following on twitter was - by definition - part of the problem with twitter.
@mattblaze It's a shame.

For the record, I don't generally sell my photos, here or anywhere else. But even if I did, I fail to see why that would be a problem.
Preventing artists from making a living is a strange hill to want to die on.
I've had people complain about everything I do ... They want to make you feel bad like them, best to just scroll on or block

@mattblaze what the hell? I love seeing photos and art here, and am in fact following several art related hashtags to see more! I have also bought stuff like t-shirts and bookmarks from independent artists posting here, and of course as an author I do promote my own books as well.
How on Earth these scolders think artists are able to keep making their art if they can't tell anyone about it?

@mattblaze
Masto, from here, has a distinct 'artists: in theory, absolutely, yes - selling art: go back to Twitter, capitalist pig' vibe.
It's a spiteful anti-influencer undercurrent. No one wants to 'create' people on the fedi. Just cats and blooms. I get it. Fuck 'influencers' as a whole species.
But they ain't the same things.My mom was everyone's biggest booster. I get that enthusiasm from her. I want everyone trying to do well. Like I cheer for everyone on 'Price Is Right'.

@mattblaze Some of my favorite people on here are artists who post their work, whether it's for sale or not. And I've happily bought from people who are selling their art.

I make this and it’s an important part of who I am and I want to share that with people is like a central aspect of what social media is all about in my view.
If you happen to also sell them either to put groceries in your fridge or so that other people can enjoy them closer then I thinks that’s a bonus not a problem.

@mattblaze @wagenseil Would you be willing to sell them to me? I can pay in tea.
@ZDL @mattblaze @wagenseil Tea is the shit, Matt. You should go for it.

@mattblaze
I honestly don't understand the problem. Sell all you want here. If i don't want to See it, i block you and that's it. So I agree in not seeing a Problem.

@mattblaze This make-no-money thing is an aspect of Mastodon I don't really understand. Plus, the solution is simple; we can block or unfollow people we don't want to see in any way.
Like many others folks, I enjoy your photos and think it'd be great if you earned a little (or a lot) of money.

@mattblaze I see lots of artists posting their own works for sale. I often boost their posts.

Lols, you might be right.
My personal pet peeve is people who don't use hashtags then whine about nobody seeing their posts b/c they don't have lots of followers. The fediverse was always supposed to be about conversations, and topics, not "influencers" or a popularity contest. But, you know, my opinion.
PS - Same goes for people who don't subscribe to any hashtags then whine about their home feed being empty...
@MissGayle @swelljoe @mattblaze the only thing worse is people like that that also complain when others try to suggest things to do to get a better experience here. And sure enough there's different ways to come forward with these suggestions, but from what I've seen at least a solid 30% of the HOA perception on Mastodon comes specifically from people who like to complain about how things don't work but don't like being told how to make it work. «I need to put alt text? Who are you, the HOA?«

@mattblaze I can squint and get where they're coming from, since every commercial platform is full of purely commercial concerns and it can feel like an intrusion to have a sense of something commercial going on here. But, and maybe this is just my Lapsed Trotskyism showing, I reckon such scolds need to think and read and ruminate more and ask themselves what they're actually upset about, why they think this is it, and how their demands in this moment would aggregate and play out. -

@mattblaze Ah, the hippy neck beard types who reject any form of commercialism because it pollutes their FOSS vision are particularly tiresome.
They don’t see that the privilege that commercial society has given us is what allows them to live within their values. We ran the communism experiment in the 20th century and it failed.

@mattblaze If I were in the market for some photos, I would definitely prefer to buy from somebody I saw in the fediverse.
There, unfortunately, are some people with "strange" standards, which they wish to impose on everybody else

@davidbcohen@twit.social @mattblaze@federate.social I mean the capitalism experiment seems to be failing spectacularly itself. I don't disagree with your general point though.

@BriBear @mattblaze Agree, I am not an apologist who worships the free market. The powerful collaborating to exploit the system is a huge issue.
