    @sundogplanets Both signs might be for international students who aren't used to bears or snow. I've seen someone cluelessly approach a bear before.

    @Hicsumus @sundogplanets right around the university is basically forest, so I wouldn't be surprised if a bear had made it onto campus. (Because of all the rain, you can get pretty much anywhere on campus without going outside, and I doubt the snow clearance is much good.)

      @sundogplanets it doesn't matter how often I remind myself that you're somewhere called SFU. Whenever I see it in your toots I hear you screaming SHUT THE FUCK UP in my head 🤣

        @sundogplanets I saw a pigeon once; I survived.

        Did I get lucky?

          @sundogplanets 1960s university architecture still looks futuristic today. I think they've filmed some sci-fi there.

            @sundogplanets oh they've filmed lots of things there... https://604now.com/simon-fraser-university-movies-filmed-at-sfu-hollywood/ I taught a workshop there 15 years ago, love the place.

              @sundogplanets they do not like trees though, do they? A bit too much concrete for my taste

                @sundogplanets the wildlife, being urbanized according to several cultural anthropology studies, would like a word

                  @MaiKueper

                  All you have to do is turn around and look away from the campus.

                  It’s all trees, down the mountain via a winding road, to the suburbs.

                  The original complex is effectively a single large building with plazas and breezeways. There were even internal corridors and stairways that led to nowhere in the 1960s, ready for further expansion as the university grew.

                  @sundogplanets

                    @sundogplanets It would probably cost a lot less than millions. You could even get a traditional dome building if you build your obsy at the top of a decommissioned silo.

                    @giltay Yes, but hiring and paying staff to run it (because there's absolutely no way I can do that on top of all my teaching and research and service) could cost millions

                      @sundogplanets I was being a little facetious. I know the cost of actually operating an observatory is why we nearly lost the David Dunlop here in Ontario.
