It's a mob apathy problem, really.

@spacemagick @The_Whore_of_Blahbylon Personal computing actually did start around that sort of timeframe with some of the earliest PCs beginning around 1972-ish. And people actually were excited to actually have programs to do those sorts of tasks.
However there's a distinction in regards to apps: computer programs up until enshittification took over computing too were about helping people. Apps now are about making profits for the companies. They require apps for things like dish washing machines to gather private information about us for them to use against us or sell.
But really the OP itself is more about finances. Until the early 2000s or so ordinary people could afford ordinary things if they worked hard. Now good luck affording a place to live with only one job.

No, no, there's no meaningful material difference between life now and life 50 years ago. People back then all had microwave ovens, cars as safe and fuel efficient as we have now, and they all carried around portable phones with free long distance that also had more computing power than spacecraft of the era. There have been no meaningful medical, technological, or other advances. It's a pure, apples-to-apples situation.

There's also a housing supply problem. Our population is growing, and average household size is shrinking. We aren't building nearly enough new housing to keep up. -
@The_Whore_of_Blahbylon to be fair, a lot of dudes did have a free version of that (and so much more!) in the form of a wife they treated like property.
Still, point holds
-
@The_Whore_of_Blahbylon @Andres4NY it’s also the massive purchasing power problem issue today. The 70s was ripe with wage theft just as bad or vastly worse than today. Don’t cut that generation any slack!
-
@The_Whore_of_Blahbylon that take is like room temperature at this point i think
(still a good take though) -
@The_Whore_of_Blahbylon EXACTLY THAT!!!
My grandparents didn't need two incomes to finance a 3-story home with 3 units.
My parents didn't need two incomes to finance a condo!
This is #Greedflation and #WageTheft!
