A quick trip out of Glasgow today to visit these steps cut into a red sandstone cliff at Peden's Cove in the Ayr Gorge near Failford in Ayrshire.
The cove is named after Alexander Peden, a former student of Glasgow University who became a leading figure in the 17th Century Covenantors movement. He spent more than a decade on the run and often wore a wig and leather mask to hide his identity.
