@Homempovo @crazyeddie what the hell are y'all taking about? It's a funny joke about tech experts vs tech enthusiasts, let it be funny
@quinn @crazyeddie I know, I was just messing with him cause he missed the point of the joke and then missed the point of the objection as well lol

@quinn Who among us hasn't wanted to shoot their printer at least once?

@quinn i work on the cutting edge of technology. I stream music from black plastic discs by dragging a rock over its surface.

Pardon the train geekery...
I look both ways too, despite rail safety systems being rated for a dangerous failure of ≥ 10−9 to < 10−8 per hour.

@quinn @ianbetteridge I ridicule people who talk about their “smart” devices or “smart homes.”
“Cool! What are you planning to do when the company goes bankrupt or discontinues support for them?”

We should all just stop creating things we probably will need to kill, and not start doing any more of them.

Nope. No sane tech worker keeps a printer in their house. Tech workers already had enough diagnosing printers in workplace. -

@quinn I’ve heard some say to keep the gun well out of reach of the printer.

@quinn Out of all the pieces of hardware to keep, this person kept their printer???
Those things are constantly trying to call home and rewire themselves to keep you from using unapproved ink. That's the official story of what they're doing anyway--who even knows if that's true. They're like the last thing I'd keep around. You can go to the library and use a printer. You probably have to anyway because you're out of ink. You just bought ink yesterday but you're out.
WTF with the printer?
Mechanically and physically, printing on paper is a solved problem. It has been for years. If it goes wrong, 9/10 the device itself has a mechanical fault. Updates do not improve a printer's performance more than it attempts to fix mistakes made in manufacture.
Get a Brother HL model, small paper toaster for $120 at an office store and maybe one replacement toner cart. Don't install shit. Windows and Mac will use it the moment you plug it in. Print, then unplug it. Same as a webcam if you aren't an influencer or creator, don't leave something you use 15-30% of the time plugged in constantly because it's easier. Put it away.
If it makes you feel better, buy a wheelie cart to roll it to wherever you want to print from. Do not network it. If it breaks, its cheap enough to replace eventually. Take it offline. Use a USB Cable. Before they lock out that use case next. You don't need updates on something that isn't on a network.

@crazyeddie @farrisswisher i have no idea, just chatting, but do what makes you feel comfortable

@quinn @crazyeddie @farrisswisher amusingly, this post was in my feed right before I came across this thread: https://mastodon.social/@paulrickards/116586198540063644

@unsungnovelty so it was on old Twitter, and it's probably still there, but the account went private a while ago -- looks Trump related going private to ignore Elon's stupid fash
@quinn Yea. I really like that comic vibe of the original meme.

@quinn Clearly a fake news. Out of any piece of technology a tech worker would never choose a printer.
It’s easier to keep flock of tamagotchis alive than one of those things… -
