The big thing though is make your timeline look less like you use your account only for promoting your own stuff. It turns people off and they don't dive deeper and see if you're engaging with people using replies.
@naturepunk @lonelyboy1977 @robyn That's true, although an account that does self-promotion while acknowledging replies and generally acting like there is an interested human behind it is still going to be much better received than an account that does self-promotion and doesn't engage at all.

What can I recommend is to search people and check their contacts. Whoever at least slightly fits your interests, follow him. Get at least 50 of them for start.
It takes a time to create a bubble here, but it definitely is worth the time.
Also - you can follow video creators as well!

Yes, the #fediverse is designed to enable comfortable little echo chambers. But that does not make me a better #writer. It may make me a better #NicheWriter, as I am competing in a smaller pool for a more-jaded set of eyeballs.
OTOH, trying to build feeds which are #trans -cultural, -community, -political, etc. … that's hard. That's hard even to **find**, because we are so insular, stuck in our path(s).
It eats writing time.

Hope the building of your timeline goes well. I echo the advice on hashtag following - I see a lot of nice content from people I don't follow due to a plethora of broad and niche hashtags I follow.
