Again: Awesome CG - but that Westworld robot can sod off. In-universe technical WTFery breaks my suspension of disbelief even worse than uncanny valley, which this clip avoids but which has to be in full effect in-universe.

Let's back up: In the WW universe it's established that robots are indistinguishable from humans, so there's no uncanny valley when they speak, emote etc. This means that whatever her face is made of 🧵👇

👆 and how it works, it moves, bulges, ripples, sweats etc. like a real face.

Let's put a pin in the question of the technical aspects of that to point out that even if future roboticists found out how to do that, there's no fucking way they would then force themselves to also invent some kind of nanotech sealing mechanisms for splits right through that "tissue" - especially to, as it seems, do nothing but provide access to a glorified USB port. They'd put that shit above the hairline 👇

👆 or jeez louise, in the big toe! No need to add 1000 extra layers of complexity to what is already by far the hardest part of making a convincing humanoid robot.

Right, let's un-pin that tech aspect, because it's also on full display: She pulls on her arm skin like a thin sleeve over a perforated, rigid metal frame, which means that not only does that thin sleeve contain everything it takes to make the body look real, like muscles flexing under the skin etc. - it's also able to somehow 👇

👆 even out & patch up what would be an extremely visible understructure though a membrane that thin & flexible.

          - and remember, this means the face also does this, plus all the other shit I went over up there.

The most annoying part is, all they had to do is not call attention to all this, just for what they thought would be a cool shot. From an in-universe tech standpoint, Data from Star Trek is still a far more realistic android than this CG-fueled nonsense. 👇

👆 I believe what we're seeing is a director's lack of understanding of the role played by the visuals in the storytelling & worldbuilding - something that seems to easily infect directors when they have access to all these CG possibilities.

Look at Jim Cameron: Started his carreer as an absolute master at that exact thing; how to get the visuals that would tell the story. And then Avatar happened.

            - but hey, it's probably just me 😁

            end 🧵
