People of a certain age from Britain (and maybe elsewhere) will remember with horror having to use toilet paper that resembled tracing paper. It was hard and crinkly, not at all absorbent, and you could literally use it for tracing.

In the city I only enjoyed the common soft toilet paper, but the game changed when we went to the country and stayed at my aunt's home (well, my father's aunt's really). She had that hard paper in the WC. She lived just below my grandma, so I tried going to gradmas' WC instead.When I was 30, a drugstore under my home closed, leaving some of these rolls in their backroom.
(Edit: something you have to take into consideration is that common soft toilet paper of the era was 2-foiled or even 1-foiled, so hard paper meet the requirement of not allowing poo to trespass the paper, and not breaking -- but it did it at a big cost).

@bodhipaksa @purplepadma We still have a similar variety of paper in the states but ours doesn’t sound quite as bad as you describe. Mostly used in schools, hospitals, etc. We used to joke, calling it John Wayne toilet paper - rough and tough.
@bodhipaksa @purplepadma @FeloniousPunk Having experience with both types mentioned, the waxy UK tracing paper was WAY worse. Not that children should ever be exposed to either.

@fullyabstract I remember it from Queen's University Belfast in the 1970s. And from peculiar corners of the University of Cambridge as late as 1994. Nobody wants that stuff when they're about to sit anything, let alone their finals. @bodhipaksa

@bodhipaksa Scotland in the 70's I guess, various locations , mainly institutional but also camping , youth hostels n such. Hideous stuff.

Shipyard toilets had attendant who issued 4 sheets of Izal non absorbant hard paper and you were allowed 4 mins to do your business. -

When I was little I lived with my Nana who used to purchase Izal, but my Uncle lived next door and my Aunt bought Andrex. I don’t know how many times she reprimanded me for using their lavatory, which was inside the house. Nana’s was across the yard and had no electric light. I was terrified in winter - of the dark and spiders!

Danish schools had this atrocity in some toilets back around 1976 at least - never realized that other countries had the same...ahem...pleasure.

@bodhipaksa I got Very cross when Lidl stopped doing their 4-ply toilet paper because that's what I'm used to from Germany, and 3-ply is barely acceptable
2ply isn't a hygiene product, it's a war crime

@bodhipaksa only very occasionally encountered it, in toilets further away from main buildings in places like schools and University buildings.
It had mostly gone by late 1970s when I was a kid, replaced by slightly less worse stuff (but not as good quality as bogroll you would buy for home).
This was in London and SE England, so maybe we were slightly more affluent in this region.

@bodhipaksa @drmikepj I encountered it at my grandparents’ place in England. It was terrifying
@moof@cupoftea.social @bodhipaksa@mastodon.scot @drmikepj@mastodon.social +1. My grandmother had two toilet paper dispensers: Tracing paper on one side because she "preferred it" and a normal one on the other side for everyone else.
I should complete the mental image by explaining that her toilet featured an old-fashioned high-level cistern with a flushing power that terrified small me. Standard Flushing Procedure involved closing the lid, holding the chain with an outstretched arm while standing as far into the doorway as possible, then delivering a swift tug before launching into an emergency high-speed sprint of the kind that was usually reserved for being pursued by school bullies or Scary Dogs. It probably smelled of Ajax.
