@anneapplebaum.bsky.social It's almost like people should stop inviting the MAGA regime to speak.

@jwcph @anneapplebaum.bsky.social the US must to be invited to speak to remind people not to fall into the same complacency that allowed the US to subvert democracies in other countries, trash the global economy through Ponzi schemes and shelter friendly oligarchs.

@cass_m @anneapplebaum.bsky.social Except that's CLEARLY not what is happening at all, now is it? Rather the opposite, in fact - we're platforming the MAGA regime as if they're as legitimate as any other government, if not more so (keynote speaker) ,despite their subversion of democracy.

That very reminder you speak of would undoubtedly come through with considerable emphasis if the rest of the world held official gatherings of all sorts to which the US was not invited.

@jwcph the majority of citizen's in, at least, the G7 no longer considers the US trustworthy; a huge grassroots shift. Canadians, I can only speak for us, are changing habits and every time the US government makes these public speeches, it's a reminder to evaluate what more can be done. The solution is not to silence speech but to create a frame work of understanding.

@cass_m I abso-fucking-lutely guarantee you, that turn in popular opinion you speak of was not caused by letting US officials speak before applauding audiences of politicians & power brokers. If anything it slows down people's counter-response; most people still assume that when things appear on the normal news etc. & is treated as if legit, it must be.

Also, nobody said anything about silencing speech. We are, however, not obliged to listen to all speech, let alone to platform & amplify it.
