For reasons the topic of super heroes came up during therapy. I mentioned how batman had been ruined for me when I fully understood that Bruce Wayne as a billionaire could have solved all the problems of Gotham city, but instead chose to spend his nights beating up the poor and mentally ill.

"Now you've ruined batman for me too"

@quixoticgeek would it help you to enjoy Batman again if I told you that canonically "Through the Wayne Foundation and the affiliated organizations underneath, Bruce Wayne addresses social-economic problems encouraging crime, assists victims of crimes, and maintains connections to the streets through the soup kitchens and social services groups; all of which augments his crime fighting efforts in a way that his Batman persona cannot"? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayne_Enterprises#Wayne_Foundation

Also, the NYC operating budget is over $100bn *per year*, so expecting an individual to solve all the problems of a similar-size city is rather optimistic.

(Punching random muggers doesn't seem like the best use of his time, admittedly)

@quixoticgeek@social.v.st that's always been an interesting worldbuilding exercise. He clearly has the capital to change Gotham, so why doesn't he? Suppose he would like to, and that he pays all his taxes.
Perhaps a private corp can't just take over the city's infrastructure. Perhaps there is a protocol to follow to change that. Perhaps there is some entrenched interests opposing it: for example, to any transit innovation, he'd find taxi drivers locking down parts of the city in protest against supposed cuts to their business.

If I reason it through, the only way I see would be a political campaign taking him to the presidency, where he'd push through laws strongly taxing the rich at all levels. He would then naturally be opposed by Lex Luthor, at the very least.

@pozorvlak @quixoticgeek Batman as proof of ACAB. Gotham PD doesn’t fight crime, it’s up to one random dude to actually stop muggings.

@quixoticgeek yep they try to say batman is different by poiting to the handful of comics where it is revealed he basically funds everything and someone magically still makes money and also doesnt help any significant change,

@quixoticgeek@social.v.st why doesn't he go for that then? Luthor has been shown to win presidential elections in the US, even though he's a known villain.
Wayne is generally known as a philanthrope and or partydude. Sure, working at becoming president would cut into his Batman time. Has he not found a strategy to beat Luthor? Is the system so corrupt that he can't beat Luthor at this game?

@quixoticgeek If you can stomach body horror, Absolute Batman has been great so far! It's working class Batman fighting against the overwhelming horrors of the world's power structures. The Joker is the billionaire. And so far it's been very thoughtful, with a focus on how the system and those in power corrupt people. It even provides a criticism of Bruce Wayne Classic's philantropy, with a common theme being the use of power to provide localized benefit to help sustain the broader system.

@quixoticgeek Reminds me of how Thanos is a shit villain in the movies because he could have created sources of resources for everyone to survive and instead decided that he was the good guy because he was murdering trillions of people.

And also none of the Avengers bothered to suggest that solution to him either. Maybe it’s because only Tony Stark had the opportunity to sit and chat with him and he too was a billionaire.
Regardless, those Avengers ain’t so bright.

@quixoticgeek Apparently this has actually been addressed in the comics at some point; it transpires that Gotham is literally cursed and thus unfixable, and it takes all Bruce Wayne's wealth and Batman's badassery just to keep it at the current level of dystopia

@quixoticgeek Apparently this has actually been addressed in the comics at some point; it transpires that Gotham is literally cursed and thus unfixable, and it takes all Bruce Wayne's wealth and Batman's badassery just to keep it at the current level of dystopia

@Dalillama that feels a lot like someone trying to retcon the fact Bruce Wayne is a shit.

                                      "Oops"

@quixoticgeek this is one of the reasons I liked the movie Batman Returns so much, the plot kind of underscored that by emphasizing the wealth of the antagonists and the amazing indifference they had towards regular people

@quixoticgeek That's undoubtedly part of it, but it's also narrative necessity: in order for Batman to exist, Gotham needs to be a shadowy dystopia. If he actually fixes anything in the long term, the comics are over. Since he's super competent and also super rich (Wayne's wealth has grown considerably over the decades), there must be an external factor stopping him from ever fixing anything, otherwise he'd have won by now.

yep. I am developing Aktor, the instance I am writing from, so I added a few new features, like IPFS cdn/storage, lua filters... and RFC  signature.
