I think it's just a result of having a network where you deliberately avoid putting your verification in the hands of one corporation, and instead use an open standard.
Twitter's verification worked because people trusted Twitter, but the Musk takeover showed what happened when someone nasty buys the company and screws the system up
It ultimately comes down to a trusted source vouching for you.
