BTW media still informs the US public about sizes by measuring in school buses, giraffes, elephants, and football fields. Talk about dumbing down the already stupid.

@stevewfolds @HeatherMJ @ingram @tiggy @Fasgadh @kibcol1049 I was brought up to believe that Americans use cups and spoons because the pioneers had these anyway on their wagons, whereas an actual pair of scales for weighing ingredients was expensive and took months to order from thousands of miles away and had no other uses but weighing things.
Which makes the idea of buying sets of measuring spoons and cups slightly arse about tit.

Whilst we measure in metric we don’t for tyres/wheels (inches), Television screen (inches) distance (miles or yards), many imbibable liquids, (Pints of milk or beer) eggs (dozen or half dozen) and many market traders in fruit and veg use pounds and ounces for us oldies.

There are 16 ounces in a pound and a US Gallon is 16 fluid ounces. Totally logical. And a pint of water weighs a pound and a quarter as the old rhyme goes.

@John_Loader @alexf24 @nobrainnopain @kibcol1049 @tiggy @Fasgadh For cooking I weight everything in grams except, for some reason, for potatoes, for which I still use ounces. (The scales do, of course, have a button to press to switch units.)

Our tablespoons and teaspoons in the UK used to be a standard size so those were used in measuring for baking.
They stopped being a standard some years ago as companies saved money by shrinking them. So now you have to pay for measuring spoons.Most cups used for baking/cooking were also a similar size. So a recipe might want 2 cups of flour or 2 tablespoons of spice.
Most USA baking recipes are still using cups and spoon measures instead of weight, but the smaller sizes not UK/imperial.
@tiggy @Fasgadh @kibcol1049 apparently at one point UK was going to be fully metric by 1975. My 'conspiracy theory' is that we stopped selling petrol in gallons when the pounds per gallon number got too high for people to accept. Although of course we still use mpg. Heights and weights and temperatures in non metric are gradually disappearing, hospitals generally have stopped giving baby weights in pounds, which helps. Yards are used for rough distance communication interchangeably with metres

Why does 69° never appear on Apple’s Weather app. It calculated temperatures in whole Celsius numbers first, then converted them to Fahrenheit for display.
That meant 20°C showed up as 68°F, while 21°C became 69.8°F and rounded to 70°F. So 69 never had a clean landing spot. Same deal for 65 and 71, but let’s be honest, nobody was launching investigations over those.So there is also no 67°F because 19°C is 66.2°F. That's sad for all the young people.

In fairness, we are very inconsistent. We sell milk in 4 pint bottles, but also in 2L bottles, which is similar in size, but a little but smaller.
I think we will become metric in most things in time. But distances, almost certainly we will retain miles and yards, because most people who drive understand these, and it would cause a whole lot of problems to change.
I can see in 30 years time, we would be putting up signs in both, and slowly changing over.

Before phonograhs and telephones, there was no way a typical Yank would hear British speech unless someone who spoke it was standing in front of them. British English evolved due to its Empire borrowing words and whatnot from its Empire; American English, isolated geographically, was frozen in amber.
Things got to the point that during WWI US and UK troops had trouble communicating -
