    #Darktable introduced Ai Vector Masking in the latest nightly. From someone who spends *alot* of time barking at the Ai moon, it's very impressive.

    Used as a tool for dodging and burning complex shapes, I'd say it's akin to to the masks I'd cut in the days of film.

    Absolutely *not* interested in anything generative. For orchestrating the exposure, it's excellent.

    Hats off to the developers.

    Unlike Adobe, DT are making tools for artists, not turning artists into their tools (for profit).

        @Printdevil
        yeah. I loved that.

        Perhaps I'll wave my hands spookily while the model spends a few seconds computing the result.

          @blabberlicious What I liked was visiting other studios and everyone comparing their favourite "bit of cardboard on wire held down with masking tape"

          It was like looking at surgical tools made on Blue Peter.

          "oh that's a nice cloud"

            Defiantly ask the parents to leave the room in those studios 😉

              @blabberlicious Photographers never went into those rooms. They only descended into the darkrooms to ceremonially prove they could still develop B&W prints on special occasions. Just to show new assistants around or something. Old soaks like me were relegated to doing 8x10"s of actors or the offers sheets for the euroSPAR.

              Commercial Photography "Not as exciting as people think"

                My brother assisted my dad for a few years. Drove him mad. Hanging out with the lab rats from Push One (on the Kings Road Chelsea) kept him sane.

                  @blabberlicious I only ask that they not call it AI - you know, like Affinity did before they were bought by Canva; there's lots of amazing automation-related tools for graphics & Affinity were perfectly able to introduce & describe them in complete detail without ever resorting to using the AI label.

                    Yeah. I don’t consider it that, but for simplicity’s sake I used the term the devs use.

                    So much of the ‘Ai magic’ is just tightly focused models that run happily on local machines.

                    Adobe doesn’t want to known that, obvs.
