Did you hear about the UK government report on ecosystem collapse? It was created not only by the environment department but also intelligence agencies like MI5 and MI6. Reporters were invited to see the unveiling of this report in October 2025 - but at the last minute the Prime Minister blocked it!

Luckily the Greens forced the release of a 14-page redacted version.

The Times said it had seen an unabridged version of the report, and that the published version had been abridged to remove references to catastrophic risks including food-system collapse and nuclear war. BusinessGreen quotes from the Times saying that the earlier version contained starker warnings that deforestation in the Congo and the loss of Himalayan glaciers could drive increases in migration to Europe, leading to "more polarised and populist politics in the UK" and putting "additional pressure on already strained national infrastructure", and would "almost certainly escalate tensions" between China, India and Pakistan, potentially leading to nuclear war.

@johncarlosbaez It’s not a great secret, it’s extremely obvious that changes in the plateau glaciers, and rainfall in the mountain catchment, will seriously affect the Ganges and Brahmaputra, and in turn the living space and agriculture for a billion-plus people.
Summarising that as “pressures on migration” doesn’t begin to describe it. Yet there are too many oil and coal interests in the Indian Govt who would rather ignore it for their richer today. Climate deniers aren’t restricted to here.

@BashStKid - this information not a great secret for those who care to know. But the UK government was scared to publish it because it's too horrifying.

Even most people who know this stuff act like they don't really believe it: few of us are getting ready.

And what would one even do to get ready?

My relatively simple and inexpensive medical needs will be untenable in an ecological collapse. There is no political will to change, so i just try to make peace with my fate.

I am simply trying to live my best life now. My life now is as good as it will ever be.

@simagick - that's one way to get ready: really get used to the idea that our civilization is collapsing, get used to the idea of a world after that, work through our grief, and so on. There might be other things we can do. I moved to a place that'll be less quick to suffer from climate disasters, I cut way back on air travel and got solar to reduce my complicity in the disaster, I tell people what's coming up....

@simagick @johncarlosbaez The answer to that is:
                  - to get more data, so we know where we are, rather than assuming a worst case
                  - more monitoring so we can get people out of harm’s way,
                  - combining some quite big civil engineering with agroforestry to slow, divert, collect, and control the water supply for those billion people.

These are not complex, and all doable, *if we don’t give up in advance*

PS Still probably a bad century to move to Bangladesh, though.

@johncarlosbaez working through the grief is a lot.

I am 45. I spent 3+ decades being told by my parents, my government, and everyone else in charge that my political/environmental/economic concerns were invalid and that I was crazy. I was told i was an extremist, or that i was an idealist, or that i didn't know how the world worked.

Now all of that stuff is happening because all of those people just wanted to pull the ladder up behind them and let the world die.

I just wanted to grow old

@BashStKid @simagick - yes, these are good collective actions. I was just listing some individual actions, which are obviously less effective, but also easier to do.

@simagick @johncarlosbaez a very common feeling unfortunately. However most people in our parents' generation didn't really want to pull up the ladder, they just had about as much power as we have now, and their governments and media were as captured by oil interests as ours are now.

My boomer parents voted for the destruction of the environment, affordable housing, access to education, government pension plans etc.

These were the popular ideas at the time. This is what their generation wanted for us. They wanted Reagan and Thatcher. And they won. They enriched themselves on the table scraps that "trickled down".

Maybe it hits different if your parents were decent people

@simagick yeah, my country got its first socialist government in ~80 years about the same time Reagan was elected, and we also have a cost of living crisis, healthcare on the verge of collapse…
This was always going to get done to us the minute that Capital was no longer afraid of the USSR @johncarlosbaez

@BashStKid @simagick - yes, these are good collective actions. I was just listing some individual actions, which are obviously less effective, but also easier to do.

@johncarlosbaez @BashStKid @simagick I can’t cut completely air travel because I live on an island, and we do not have a bridge. High-speed train only gets to the continental part of Italy. But I did cut meat eating since 14 years already. Meat industry is a great source of deforestation and pollution.

@johncarlosbaez @BashStKid @simagick effects of climate change in my island are already obvious. However, there are still deniers.

@johncarlosbaez I'm sure they're working hard on countering exactly that, that's what politicians around the world totally seem to be doing.

                                      Did I get it right?

Yea in the UK we are not going to have barbecues.

                                      That'll fix it!
