@golgaloth If it's a world without gods, like the real world, then it's just like this picture: essentially a millennia-old game of "telephone".
If it's a world that has actual gods that do actual things like most fantasy worlds, then it's the result of flawed human beings trying to suss what the ineffable beings of the spirit world want from humanity.

Seems to me Judaism pulling together multiple traditions in order to produce a set of laws laying out a moral code that were a marked improvement on what existed at the time, removed the whims of monarchs as the source of law, and tossed in improvements on public health practices for good measure is due a bit of applause.
