@CordiallyChloe @BenRiceM Well I don't really engage in her work so I wouldn't agree that I am part of the problem.

By opinions I mean the ones based on the art and author thing - factual, referential statements that happened aside, I think I am only discussing the subjective matter on 'who could someone who enjoys an IP possibly be & what can we attribute to them based on that'.

    @nudlan @BenRiceM

Rather than playing semantics with trans people on the internet, you could go help get the message out.

Go tell others what JK Rowling is doing and why it's bad to engage with her work. Show that you actually care.

Then we don't have to keep going down this rabbit hole.

But if you keep just arguing with trans people on the internet about it and downplaying our experiences and telling us we're overreacting, then you're absolutely part of the problem, if not THE problem, in your actions alone.

@CordiallyChloe @BenRiceM I don't think my point was argumentative but I guess I can see it could read that way.
By joining Mastodon I am trying to be better to get messages out I truly believe in.
I explained that I struggle with this separation thing and I 'do' make people aware of things I find wrong or unfair. I have never got through a HP discussion without making absolutely sure people know that they 'are' lining hateful pockets by engaging.
Any time I have I seem to be the only one aware.

We have been screaming from the rooftops for almost a decade about the harm this causes to trans people. You have no excuse.

        @BenRiceM
Ten years of 'you have no excuse' framing hasn't changed anyone's mind — it's just made discourse exhausting. HP gave a lot of people a genuinely good childhood. Threatening to unfollow people over a theme park photo isn't activism, it's just moralizing.

JK posted an upskirt image of a Trans woman on her Shitter account, which is sexual harassment. If that isn't someone's last straw, then they're not worth associating with.

@CordiallyChloe @BenRiceM I guess what I am trying to say is I struggle to say authoritatively "If you like HP you are automatically hateful and are guilty of everything the Author has put out there".
Are they guilty of supporting her financially? Yes.
Ignorant for not knowing? Sure, but we are all ignorant of things we are not aware of.
Should they continue, in good conscience, to support the IP? No.
But enjoying the concept & the world, loving the characters & wanting more? I can't fault that.

Ok then what happened here is a very different problem.

Minorities are often acutely aware of what is causing our oppression to happen. We spend a LOT of time discussing it within our circles and doing what we can to fight it.

We KNOW that lots of people are unaware of what's happening.

The issue with this thread is that you felt the need to come in and tell us why it's happening, and that wasn't necessary. So it comes across as starting a fight and downplaying the issue. So just don't do that.

Tell us what you're doing to fight the ignorance. Not why the ignorance is occurring.

@CordiallyChloe @BenRiceM My first comment was exactly what you told me to do.

I am simply stating my beliefs in whatever way 500 characters or less allow me to.

I genuinely hope the author stops reaping boundless amounts of cash after everything they have done. It is part of lots of things that are horrible in the modern world.

And I literally just told you NOT to do that.

I told you that it's far more effective to educate people about JK Rowling's bigotry. You don't need to educate trans people about why cishet people are still engaging in her work. We already know. And it's still shitty.

@CordiallyChloe @BenRiceM Aah right I see your point.

I guess from my point of view stating that 'I am against hate' goes without saying & I am more interested in the subjective elements of the discussion.
I really don't feel the need to show off or promote myself either (you know how YTer will film themselves donating and shit like that) even though you are right - opening with that would have been better.
I don't suffer like you guys suffer so I didn't read it from your POV, sorry about that

@CordiallyChloe @BenRiceM Well I apologise if I am using a 'layman's term' for the separation but even taking that out I don't think my point is excusing awful behaviour but rather observing what is fair in reality.
The very motherboards we communicate with are produced within completely inhumane & unacceptable working conditions in places where human rights are merely an idea.
I think if we can buy & use tech despite that then I think people enjoying a fantasy despite writers isn't wrong.

@nudlan @CordiallyChloe @BenRiceM the technology on our motherboards was invented by trans women. Also a British trans woman invented the ARM chip. Sophie Wilson. All trans women, who JKR wants gone.

And I think that's the appropriate stance. Its ok to admit you _used_ to like something before you became aware of the creator's opinions or behaviors. Just don't give them any more money.

Strange, I was _just_ thinking of the mastodon.lol implosion what, 3 yrs ago? 4? when the stupid wizard game came out... that ended.. poorly. In any case, yeah, promoting or talking openly about the bad things on socials counts as giving the bad thing air which is giving it - and thus the creator - more money. (not to excuse that admin for handling everything badly)

Engaging with Harry Potter books, movies, theme parks, etc and announcing it to social media is a bizarre thing to do in 2026.

We have been screaming from the rooftops for almost a decade about the harm this causes to trans people. You have no excuse.

JK Rowling certainly wasn't obsessing about trans people when she was on the dole.
