@andree4live @oneloop @Tutanota additionally, every website you visit you should check if it's hosted in the Google Cloud because that would mean it's not Google Free either.
So the question is, what is the definition of Google Free? For me, it is by default no connections to any Google server, no usage of any Google app, etc. And the control is fully with the user.
And with this definition, as far as I know, there is only #grapheneOS.
Others seem to connect at least to the captive portal or supl or connectivity checks to google server -

@lexinova @Tutanota Each of the options they're promoting has poor privacy in addition to atrocious security. None of those provide current privacy patches and important privacy protections. Disregarding whatever Tuta says about privacy and avoiding their sketchy services is a good approach. Tuta is much worse than many of their competitors including Proton. Instead of improving their products they spread endless misinformation in their marketing and attack serious privacy/security projects.

I've always been interested in getting rid of Android in favour of something like @GrapheneOS or @LineageOS . However, I'm not a technical person and have no idea how to install them, much less fix anything should it go wrong. Until a good Google-free, Apple-free option is easy to install or pre-installed, I have to stay with the Big Two.

@GrapheneOS @lexinova @Tutanota ...but using Graphene is not Google free, sadly, when it's giving Google hundreds of dollars for the phone, and for many I believe that's more important. Looking forward to hearing about the new non-Google phones you're going to support, though, because besides that massive (to me) limitation I'd be curious to try out Graphene. It could very well be my favourite phone OS, maybe alongside a regular Linux phone that isn't Android.

@GenXer @Tutanota @volla @Fairphone @murena @GrapheneOS @LineageOS Graphene currently requiries buying a Google phone (Pixel), so it's not Google-free at the moment. But they've announced that they've found a new non-Google partner, which AFAIK hasn't been revealed yet.
As for easily getting started as a non-technical person, I think it may be a challenge without getting help, but getting a phone preinstalled with some of these IS possible, so that's likely the easiest.

1. Paying Google hundreds of dollars, which helps them maintain/strengthen their monopoly
2. That Google builds the hardware I use
3. Buying US hardware (if I can avoid it)I hope in time to leave Android to get away from AOSP or something based off it as well, going for a pure Linux phone. Some Android apps may still be runnable through e.g. Waydroid/emulation, but i don't think I'd really need that.

@marcusxms @Okuna @oneloop @Tutanota I believe it is important to realize that you don't have to change the whole world at once, but can also take small steps. Step by step, it's a little easier and more fun.

@andree4live @Okuna @oneloop @Tutanota Taking small steps moves you forward infinitely faster than standing still, but standing still is easier, so sometimes people have these all-or-nothing excuses to convince themselves of picking "nothing".
