Abdanan, January 7th 2026. A 40K people city in Iranian mountains where people took over all police and government buildings, as far as we gather. Internet blockades are happening intermittently in various forms. There is a massive sense of uncertainty and panic, also from the government side.
We hear of many people succeeding in using #deltachat and #chatmail relays, and are trying, to the best of our abilities, to help people set up communications so families and friends can stay safe.

@rezad that doesn't change anything about the fact that people need to be able to stay safe, and have reliable private communication to navigate turmoil.

@rezad yes, people took over governmental buildings. We ventured to describe facts as far as we can ascertain them. When it comes to any authoritarian government versus its peoples, most of our contributor communities indeed tend to take the side of the people. In an authoritarian and violent environment, we don't regard disconnecting surveillance cameras as terrorism but rather as self-defense.

i agree with you that the politics of devs of a chat app are relevant. for example, regardless of alleged technical quality of simplex chat, i will not use a messenger made by nazis for nazis.
you are right to question the post from deltachat supporting iran protests.

when the retailers (first mobile phone retailers) were demonstrating against the dollar price there were obvious people trying to make them go to streets and riot.
There is even a video showing a young woman trying to invite them to burn stuff and a man telling her to go away and that they will not do that.
At the start when regular people were protesting dollar price flu tuation the police was walking beside them to keep them safe. -

Hello from Iran. Do the research again please and try to detect the IRGC propaganda. Yes the protest is supported from outside but it is rooted in Iran. The support cannot ruin the authenticity of the protest. -
