@CiaraNi @sebastian @Flatus
What's your opinion about Jottacloud? They are a Norwegian company.
https://jottacloud.com/nb/@andresimous @sebastian @Flatus Thanks for the recommendation - I've added the name to my list for investigating when I browser more around.

’Denmark Switches.’ A national campaign to collectively move off Big Tech. March 20th is Big Switch Day. I’ve named my goal now. I’m already almost deMicrosofted, except for my photo archive. I moved to Libre & Tuta mail and have been purging photos as I await the release of Tuta drive. Now I’m committing myself to just get the photos off OneDrive and on to my computer, that I own, in my house, by March 20th. Then I’ll delete Microsoft. Then I’ll boast about it on the Fediverse.

@CiaraNi
Sooner or later it's going to get really bad for the Americans, unless they get the hang of things. -
@chris Agreed
-
@sebastian @Flatus Thanks for the tip. I did browse around in NextCloud's solutions but couldn't see a simple off-the-shelf one for a non-tech person like me who just wants it to plug-and-play work. I've been waiting to see Tuta's drive. Then the DanmarkSkifter campaign nudged to me to stop faffing around - get off OneDrive now, get the photos backed up, then pick the right cloud solution after that. Otherwise I'll never take that final step.

Before I could pick my 2026 goal for #DanmarkSkifter, I did a digital status. I was mildly surprised when I saw my 2025 digital changes together. I looked at the list and thought: ’Tell me you hang out in the Fediverse without telling me you hang out in the Fediverse.’
From Outlook to Tuta
From Office to Libre
From MS Authenticator to Ente Authenticator
From Google Play to F-Droid
From Spotify to AntennaPod
From Firefox to Vivaldi
From DuckDuckGo to NoAIDuckDuckGo
And I bought a back-up drive.@CiaraNi noiaduckduckgo. Den kendte jeg ikke! Tak for tippet!

-
@sebastian @Flatus Agreed. I was pleasantly surprised at how relatively inexpensive a very large back-drive was. And doing manual back-ups and removing my too-large photo archive from the cloud manually has forced me into better habits, making me think about what I keep and what I delete. (For years, I was blissfully unaware of the environmental cost of digital storage.)

@metteh Jeg tror, jeg selv hørte om noAI-Duck i første omgang her på Mastodon. Det var befriende at flytte over til!

@CiaraNi I am thinking of switching the family from Google calender to Tuta calender, as I already use Tuta mail. We use gcal to coordinate our days, so it really has to work. Do you have experience with a shared Tuta Calender?

@Orewoet Sorry, no, I haven't used it as a shared calendar. Maybe someone else here in the Fediverse has - I'd be interested to hear myself.

Do this switch fast, because the wealthiest people on the planet are funding efforts to put AI everywhere.
AI is international state surveillance & malign influence campaign generator.
AI is spyware & these billionaires don't give two hoots about anyone's "economic mobility" but their own.

”42% of Danes want to try alternatives to Big Tech. 68% would like to reduce their screen time. But far fewer act on it.
Habits hold us back. Network effects bind us to the same platforms as everyone else. This only changes if we shift collectively. When we shift together, new habits become easier to maintain.
When enough of us shift simultaneously, alternative platforms gain the critical mass they need. When we act collectively, change is possible.”
@CiaraNi Unfortunately, it's not only habits, for some switching you need a computer literacy that many people don't have. And many are alone with that problem. So we also need helping structures, independent from families.

@leanderlindahl @metteh Ah! Godt at vide. Tak. Dem må jeg undersøge. Jeg håber, de har en noAI-udgave - det har været den afgørende fantastisk med noAI-Duck.

@CiaraNi Getting *something* done is absolutely a lot better than doing nothing.
If you want cloud storage for one copy (*don't* make that your only copy! always have at least one completely separate backup; and since you have that backup drive, you're practically all the way there already), there are several European providers that will sell you either bare storage space or something like a managed Nextcloud instance (where you can also store arbitrary files).
