I keep looking for active discussions on Masto; maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places?

@Verati404 I highly recommend you start by following some extremely active extroverts, (not all of whom are named Alice, I promise!)
@Binder (boosts people from all over fedi so new uses can find each other)
@alice@lgbtqia.space (generally friendly and cool, posts locksport videos)
@Alice@beige.party (the funniest user on beige party, the premier shit posting instance)
@ai6yr (posts about ham radio, the weather, repairing things, and generally news, usually has a well-run comment section)
@pencilears Thank you for the reccs! Gonna go follow all of them.
-
@pencilears
Hmm, they are only following 183 people, and most of them not active.@ai6yr @pencilears I'm not a bot or a scam or w/e if that's what you're worried about. I was here a long time ago for a bit but felt kinda isolated and didn't know how to find enough people with shared interests (mostly creative stuff & niche nerds who like to talk about their various science, also bird enthusiasts and certain fandoms). Trying to fix that this time.

@alice it will probably happen again, I think you're mutuals with every woman and nonbinary person in science on fedi? Something like that.

I'm so much more used to socmed sites where folks talk to each other. It feels so silent and isolated here. Why??? I know there are humans around; my feed is full of posts but none of them seem to have any comments. It's just a bunch of folks shouting into the void.
Is it just a difference in culture here? Or am I just missing all the action somehow?
@Verati404 it’s weird some accounts get more comments than others. There are definitely some conversations going on. But there is a lot less interaction for the most part than old Twitter back before Elon, or several of the other social media networks have been known

@Verati404 @pencilears Cool! Follow lots of people! (lots more!). You can always unfollow anyone you don't want to see posts for!
-
@pencilears @ai6yr Yeah, I made this account a long time ago and then wound up on other places like bluesky, but I do like Masto so I want to give it a second earnest try. (And yeah, had to go grab groceries real quick when I realized I was out of milk and sugar.)
@Verati404 Follow people. Follow hashtags. Even randomly. It might appear that after few days you do not really like a person you follow. Or what is being tagged. Then unfollow.
To the list of recommended accounts I would add @dgar and @catsalad. They are very active. However, I cannot promise you will like the activity 🤭
And for some good feeling artsy content, check @cmconseils and @Natasha_Jay.

@Verati404 the nature of the fediverse has a lot to do with what gets on your timeline. it's not one firehose like corp SM. normally, if a thread is across instances you may have to follow both parties to see responses. if any toot interests you click the replies icon even if it says 0.

@Verati404 so, as you know, mastodon is a software that a bunch of different people are all running on their own websites.
Because the websites are "federated" you can see my posts and I can see yours, we can talk over the network.
But, because you can only see the parts of the network that you're federated with, you're not going to see most of the conversations, because you can't see the people commenting on posts if your server doesn't fetch their posts already.
Ah, just jumping in to say thank you for explaining this. I had always wondered why I would occasionally see one half of a conversation without the other.

@Verati404 One of the ways to trigger discussion is to actually reply yourself. I think a lot of people are waiting for someone else to leap in.

@Verati404 echoing what others have said, following hashtags about people talking about things that interest you is a good place to start. For example, I'm a biker and follow #bikenite which is a conversion about various biking topics on Friday evenings. Whatever interests you have, there are most likely hastags. Obseve a little, and join the conversations!

@Verati404 it looks like traction here need to improve a lot to match centralized socmeds

@Verati404 Masto/ the Fedi is also a place with alot of people who value their privacy. Not to say these ppl dont have social skills and needs. But I think the tendencey is to being private, and respecting privacy. To be careful to not invade someone's privacy, at least not too much. And to not draw too much attention to themselves. That's my observation.
