I keep looking for active discussions on Masto; maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places?
I'm so much more used to socmed sites where folks talk to each other. It feels so silent and isolated here. Why??? I know there are humans around; my feed is full of posts but none of them seem to have any comments. It's just a bunch of folks shouting into the void.
Is it just a difference in culture here? Or am I just missing all the action somehow?
@Verati404 Masto/ the Fedi is also a place with alot of people who value their privacy. Not to say these ppl dont have social skills and needs. But I think the tendencey is to being private, and respecting privacy. To be careful to not invade someone's privacy, at least not too much. And to not draw too much attention to themselves. That's my observation.

@Scofisticated Totally fair! Socials mean different things to different people. It was just weird to me when I showed up that I couldn't see basically anything. I was used to other platforms and following people after I saw something of someone on a general feed to know whether I was going to like their account or not. But here it seems to work the opposite: follow fast, unfollow if necessary.
Which is fine. It just wasn't intuitive behavior for me.

@isocat I think I found some hashtags that work? Mostly writing, art, birds, nature stuff, random science. Roughly that order. Idk, my interests are broad overall. I wanted to find an alt to bsky in case the venture cap assholes in charge of it decide to fuck it up (more).
I like the idea of the Fediverse but it took a hot minute to understand how to get anything out of it. A bunch of lovely people in the replies to this post pointed me in the right direction, so I'm following a lot more accts.

@Verati404 Hello random stranger. Most of the time I use this service more as a micro blog than anything. So, if someone does interact, I make an attempt to reply. I don't always, but that's just the nature of how I use this. Sometimes, I'll respond to someone, and never get a response. It's just how this works, for better or worse. Mastodon is a unique place on the web. There are fewer users in general, and we all have lives to live. Just enjoy it for what it is.

Imho the key to mastodon is hashtags and filters.
First, search for subjects that interest you, say cooking and running and follow those hashtags. Every post with those tags will now appear in your feed, including many discussion threads and you'll see replies too which will also be tagged. Then follow the people that post too.
If it gets too much, use filters (keywords) and muting (whole accounts) to reduce the things you're not interested in. You can filter out hashtags too.
