I keep looking for active discussions on Masto; maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places?
I'm so much more used to socmed sites where folks talk to each other. It feels so silent and isolated here. Why??? I know there are humans around; my feed is full of posts but none of them seem to have any comments. It's just a bunch of folks shouting into the void.
Is it just a difference in culture here? Or am I just missing all the action somehow?
@Verati404 I have had numerous active discussions on Mastodon. Perhaps it is the people I follow. I enjoy the threads that I am part of

Imho the key to mastodon is hashtags and filters.
First, search for subjects that interest you, say cooking and running and follow those hashtags. Every post with those tags will now appear in your feed, including many discussion threads and you'll see replies too which will also be tagged. Then follow the people that post too.
If it gets too much, use filters (keywords) and muting (whole accounts) to reduce the things you're not interested in. You can filter out hashtags too.

@Verati404 Hi! I'm Josh and I'm mainly a #cuteart poster although I also mess around sometimes as well. My Mastodon intro post goes more into detail on the stuff I like to post, as does my Friendica intro post.

@Verati404 Follow people. Follow hashtags. Even randomly. It might appear that after few days you do not really like a person you follow. Or what is being tagged. Then unfollow.
To the list of recommended accounts I would add @dgar and @catsalad. They are very active. However, I cannot promise you will like the activity 🤭
And for some good feeling artsy content, check @cmconseils and @Natasha_Jay.
@Verati404 Also, for some touching poetry: @Aphelion. And for lovely, heartful observations of everyday life: @georgepenney.
Additionally, @joybooster and @joyousjoyness deserve their names.
