Ok. This thing is amazing. It ain't no gimmick. More cities could use this.

Despite the base of the system being a 100yrs old the acceleration of the modern vehicles is FAST. Comfort of entry and exit is excellent despite it being very busy.

@Pepijn My wife is from Wuppertal. When we had just met, she explained me the Schwebebahn but somehow the "cabin hanging over the river" became something entirely different in my mind (see picture). So you can image my surprise when we finally visited Wuppertal...

@Pepijn Definitely a bucket list item for me too, by the way. 😁

@cazmockett Dangletrain + all busses in "zone A". I think that's a rather large area of basically the entire dangletrain route + a couple km city on either side.

I will not enter any busses though. It's dangletrain all the way (and back again).

@Pepijn Ohhh, I didn't know they had one train that doesn't have the light blue livery, but one that's obviously a hommage to the livery of the previous trains!

@geeeero Yup. Literally one out of the 35 or so they have (as I was told by the shopkeeper of the model train shop who was trying to 'upsell' me to the one he thinks is prettier).

Wuppertal is kinda surprising in how interesting it is. Admittedly I knew only one thing about it before coming here and not even checked Wikipedia while in the train.

Besides the excellent rollercoaster, ICE connection and fancy bus-station the town is a typical car-first German town. Non-car-first places here are "dedicated specials" (see photos).

Also as a Dutch person living in Denmark I had -again- forgotten that cities can have vertical distance as well..

Somehow the worlds smallest ICE is parked in there.

Edit: Turns out https://nordbahntrasse.de/ is a big thing.

Edit 2: yes I'm a shit tourist. I usually just walk around in ever larger circles until I hit a museum, old train or some interesting person.

Oh no! I stumbled upon a model railroad shop.

(and now own a fully non-operational 1:87 scale Schwebebahn EMU).

And some more photos. As requested 🙂

One thing that clearly makes a positive difference in how successful the #Schwebebahn integrates in the city is how accessible and friendly the stations are.

None of them are exactly the same but they all have in common that there's a low-stress pedestrian feel to both the platforms and the immediate surroundings.

It reminds me a bit of many of the platforms within the #Chicago "L" elevated train system. That one has more of an aggressive police & rat presence though.

@rhempel Yup. And not only for the visible stuff. Apparently in 2019 the entire system was upgraded to ECTS level 3, the highest level of modern train control. Most normal train systems in Europe still don't have that.

It's worth a detour to visit.

@Kadsenchaos Justice out of curiosity: do the fast majority of the locals pay, or do they just hop on and hope for the best? I didn't see any of the ticket checks that usually are common in Germany.

Most likely have monthly tickets. Many school and university students have tickets, too.
Controls will happen randomly by people getting on in one station, then checking everyone on bord.

Oh no! I stumbled upon a model railroad shop.

(and now own a fully non-operational 1:87 scale Schwebebahn EMU).

And some more photos. As requested 🙂

@cazmockett I mean, I took the fancy rollercoaster to a specific station, then walked uphill for a kilometre (seriously, hills have no place in a modern society) and then it was on the left side of the street while I expected it to be in the right.

                                          So yeah-ish.
