But strangely, Denmark no longer has a city by that name.
Århus was originally named Aros from 700-1406, when the city name changed to Aarhus. But in 1948 Denmark had a spelling reform where the character Å was introduced to represent Aa, and Aarhus became Århus.
However, because of international tourism and events, the city council decided to revert to the old name Aarhus in 2010, making it easier to spell internationally without the Å.
@randahl As a Brit, I am shocked and appalled that someone would choose to rename a city to follow modern pronunciation guidelines or make it easier for foreigners to read.

To make this even more confusing, in Danish a river is called an å, and because Århus had a river named Århus Å, that river is now called Aarhus Å, not Aarhus Aa.

Cool conference, tho. I met one of Dijkstra's sons, outside, in the freezing rain. We shared a smoke and a hit of whiskey.
(You're not a computer geek, so you might not know who Dijkstra was, but trust me, he was a very major geek.)
@GeePawHill @randahl if the venue was at Uni, definitely no awnings in sight. The architecture is from a time where everyone smoked everywhere indoors. They’re building a new campus just east of the old one, I wonder how much covered outdoors space there will be? Would make sense to have quite a bit of tree cover now to shelter from sun and heat.

@randahl I'm an international visiting Århus in a few week who prefers the Å. Instead of trading it to an AA they could also have made it a trademark kind of thing to have something special, something a bit weird. Keep Århus weird! (Like the Portland, Oregon city slogan).

@randahl @GeePawHill no worries. There’s plenty of buildings in DK with no covered outdoor space. I was just reminded by my latest conference trip which was Bologna this May. A 35+ heatwave is a lot more pleasant when the buildings overhang the walkways and the streets are too narrow to let the sun reach the tarmac.

@randahl Curiously, the roads between Randers and Aarhus still carry the old names Århusvej and Gl. Århusvej.

In times of #Unicode this doesn't seem necessary anymore. Non-Danish speakers wouln't know how to pronounce it correctly anyway, whether ist Århus or Aarhus.
Non-Germans also regularly stumble over äöüß, sometimes mixing up ß with B or β.
The same happens with éèê, as well as şğ and others.
Let alone other scripts like Arabic, Cyrillic or East Asian scripts.

@masek @randahl yes in 2017. Was there 2 years ago. Really lovely city. Visited among other things the new city hall, art museum and their university campus. Focus was on architecture and city development.
Very interesting city. I extremely liked the new city hall for various reasons. Less for its general appearance, but the use and interior.
